What is the best strategy for dealing with Type 1 diabetes and OCD at the same time? Drugs aimed at treating OCD seem to play havoc with blood sugar levels, are these effects temporary or persist while the drugs are taken?

Hi there, are you asking for a friend? Does the OCD affect the diabetes management or is it just the OCD pills possibly causing higher levels in & of themselves that concerns you?

I'm asking for a child of mine, though in their 20's. OCD itself affects managing diabetes in an indirect way. It makes your world smaller so some things become much harder to do. For example going out and taking exercise, or visiting clinics etc. One form of treatment for OCD is to use Sertraline, which itself takes a number of weeks to work. Unfortunately it does appear to make blood glucose levels more erratic (more Hypo's at night, higher than expected levels in the day). What we don't know is whether these effects are temporary or the erratic behaviour persists as long as the drug is being taken.

I can't help on the medication front as I refuse to take medication for it but what type of OCD are they suffering? I don't go out and haven't for a year but that's because I have contamination OCD and anciety and am absolutely petrified but I understand how OCD effects a persons life on a daily basis xx

kaylz91, thank you for reaching out. Like yourself, the contamination variety. We understand what you too are going through. You aren't alone. Thus far we haven't as yet found a specialist who is well versed both in Type 1 and OCD, it's like the quest for the holy grail.
