hi All,

After only a week my levels have been coming down nicely. Now regularly <8.5 2 hours after food and in the early 7's fasting reading. (Had 1 under 7 so far)

Went out for first meal last night. Italian. Had meatballs to start, Chicken fillet in creamy peppercorn sauce and vegs for main, 1 glass red wine.

Was impressed beyond impressedness with myself a) for discipline and b) 2 read of 7.6 2 hours after :P

Was gutted this morning with a reading of 9.1. Not had a reading that high since diagnosis.

Any thoughts?

Glad you had a good night out.
I find if I have alcohol in the evening my levels the next morning are higher so you could be the same.
Don't be concerned it will settle again. There is always something that tries to confuse us with this condition!
Have a good Christmas!
Regards
Angie

Morning readings can be unreliable due to overnight glucose dumping by the liver for the body to start the day etc. I would take more notice of readings 2 hours after a reasonable meal and yours appear to be not too bad, so don't panic!

Don't worry. Probably not the alcohol - most of us have lower fasting after alcohol. I bet your meal out was later than when you eat in. So you ate closer to bedtime, BG was higher at bed so will be higher in the morning still. That's how it works for me on diet only.

Hi MaryJ!

This happens to me quite a lot - it is very frustrating. Basically, when you tested at 2 hours, your BG was probably still rising (or just starting to rise). There was probably a lot of fat in the meal with the meatballs and creamy sauce on the chicken and this will probably have slowed down the absorbtion of the carb meaning it hit you later. My 3-4 hour reading is quite often higher than the 2 hour reading - sometimes my body just processes the carb later I guess. I'm on insulin, so have the added joy of going hypo before going high because the insulin hits before the carb when this happens and has run out by the time the carb hits  Anyway, as others have said, just put it down to experience. Next time you go out for a meal, it might be worth testing before you go to bed to see if you are high or low at that stage as this will give you a clue what is happening - although I'm not sure what a Type 2 could do about it anyway.

At least you enjoyed your meal!

p.s. You could have a second glass of red wine with your meal - I find it amazing at bringing down BG

All you can do is try to eat earlier when you go out for a meal so you have plenty of time before bed for your BGs to come down.

I have to have some sort of exercise after eating or my levels don't return to normal for hours. The medication doesn't seem to work - even on a small, low carb meal.
When i go out for a meal I tend to be sitttibng down longer than when at home so my levels are always higher irrespective of what I have eaten. Alcojhol certainly helps. Even a short period of exercise or a short walk seems to galvanise the meds {or he pancreas } .
