oil of cloves - lowers sugar levels?

hi all,
for the last couple of nights ive been chewing on whole oil of cloves, just for something to nibble on really, rather than nibbling on more fattening things.
yeah, they are a bit pungent i must say lol, but, i like them.
i happened to do a google search to see if i might be doing more harm than good eating them, and i read that they are rich in certain vitamins, and are also known to help lower blood sugar levels!
now, it might be coincidental, but yes, since ive been munching on them after a meal, i have noticed my readings have been lower!
sooooo, if this is right, give it a go! its worth a try anyway. and if nothing else, it keeps your mouth busy munching on them lol.
(ive also read that cinnamon is meant to be good too)
kind regards
jackie
ps - let us know if you try them and if you see any improvement in your readings :o)

How do you chew on oil? Do you put a whole clove in your mouth and chew it until it disolves?

these cloves are horrible , when i was a kid if we had toothache then mother would give us one of these cloves to keep in your mouth against the sore tooth , only tiny things but very stong and hot

hi patch, hi ragman,
these are whole cloves, not the oil.
you get hundreds in a jar from the supermarket for about 56p.
yes, they are strong and hot, and yes they are used to help with toothache too.
i really dont mind the taste attall, infact im enjoying chewing on a couple at a time, and i seem to be getting through quite a few of the things! lol
if my sugar levels improve by eating them, well, im going to stick at it.
im out for a meal with friends tonight, so i will take some with me in a little container, and when i resist having a pud, i will get my cloves out my bag and munch on them instead! lol .. hmmmm, not quite the same i know.. but hey ho! :D

I have to agree - cloves are foul tasting ! I can think of better ways to help lower Bg levels. However if you like the taste - go for it.

Do you have any references/links which prove they actually lower levels or is this just anecdotal. You usually find that the places selling these type of things are the ones who claim it does all manner of wonderful things ? Call me a sceptic if you like but I remain to be convinced.

yeah there seems to be quite a bit online about the benefits of taking clove oil, and not just from companies trying to promote their goods.

i might be getting excited over nothing i know lol .... it might have nothing to do with the cloves whatsoever...
but it just seems a coincidence since ive started munching on them, ive noticed quite a drop in my readings....

anywaaaay... we shall see eh?

i just wanted to share thats all. if it was helping me, i wanted it to help others too!

would be interesting to hear if anyone else tries them, to see if they notice any difference too...?

That's just what I like to see. People sharing their experiences with others. Its what this place is all about.

So I take it from your reply there is no actual evidence/trials you can show us then ? Never mind - let's see how many others gain some benefit.

Like I said - I'm a sceptic where these claims are concerned until I actually see some scientific proof. Show me that and I'm all ears !

well to be honest i havent done alot of research on it!! lol ..

yes theres lots on the internet where it mentions that 'oil of cloves can help with diabetes'.
have a look yourself.

and yes i did briefly read an article the other night when i was just flitting around reading this and that about it, of a test that was carried out over a period of 6 months or something..
half of the people started taking cloves and half of the people carried on as they were.
at the end of the given time, those who had taken the cloves showed a lower hba1c than those who hadnt taken it...

anyway, im not trying to preach or claim im taking a wonder drug, oops sorry, a wonder herb! lol ...
and like i say, i might be getting enthusiastic about nothing! and it just might all be coincidental....
so in a few days time i will not only be eating whiffy cloves, but i will be eating my words too! lol

Thanks for that.

I have looked in many places both on the net and elsewhere a while ago when this was first mentioned here in another thread. That's just what we do.

I thought that maybe you could help me with the link to the trial you mentioned. However if you can't remember where it was I suppose we shall have to leave it at that.

One thing I found was this particular link from Medline Plus about Clove and clove Oil:
It does say it MAY help but there are many cautions and warnings about its use. Especially if you have Diabetes. Definitely worth a look if you are thinking of using it.

i will certainly have a look again to see if i can find that piece on the test thyey carried out, no problem.

i know i wasnt particularly looking for anything specific when i was looking online, i just wanted to have a nosey on what it said about just nibbling on them, as in snacking, because like i said in my first post, i thought i could busy my mouth with those, instead of busying it with sweeter temptations lol.
so, i was surprised when i happened to see by chance, many mentions of how it may help with lowering blood sugar levels..
and then of course i noticed my sugar readings seemed to be slightly better since yesterday.
ie today i had a bowl of kellogs cornflakes, about 40g, with skimmed milk.
before i had them my reading was
1pm - 5.4
2.pm - 10.8
3pm - 7.7
3.40pm - 5.9
that might be the norm for most, but for me it was very good
last night i had a sandwich of 2 slices of white bread, flora spread, thin slices of cheddar cheese and a spreading of daddies brown sauce..
before i had them my reading was
6.30pm - 8.5
7.50pm - 9.2
8.55pm - 7.8
9. 55pm - 5.4
that again, for me, is excellent!

Whilst your levels may be coming down how much of that drop is down to your med's. Are you still on insulin, Victoza and Metformin ?

To be perfectly honest I have to say that after reading up about the possible effects which are well documented in the link I posted I would have to advise anybody to think carefully before using this. Whatever small benefits it MAY have are far outweighed by the side effects, cautions and warnings.

Sorry - that's my take on it. :|

I'm stunned to find someone who actually LIKES the taste of these things. Thanks to extreme tooth ache over a year ago I now can't even stand the smell of these things! Great for numbing a tooth/Gum (the whole ones that is), but every time I smell them now it just reminds me of pain and makes me cringe. I actually emptied out a tea bag, ground about ten up in my pestle and mortar and made a little 'pack' which i jammed under my lip.....the joys of crumbling teeth!
