OK so now I'm spooked - unexplained BG rises

So I was diagnosed in December with an HbA1c of 108 (12%). Pretty high but via lchf had got myself to a 30 day average of 7.7, with better scores for pre-meal (7.2) and post-meal (7.6).

Have been away from home for 3 nights for the first time since diagnosis and am suddenly getting higher than usual readings. Got an 8.9 pre breakfast on Friday (up from 7.7 on waking) and now today, after a fasting level of 7.6, I'm up to 9.6 (ouch) after breakfast.

Normally I get a rise between waking up and pre-breakfast, but then breakfast brings rates down and they decline all day before a small rise after dinner.

I've been careful to stay low carb whilst away. Breakfast this morning was 2 fried eggs, 2 rashers of bacon, half a small tomato and 2 small sausages. Since the sausages were from the hotel buffet, carb content unknown, but wouldn't expect such a spike.

Am planning to test with different strips once I get home.

Any other ideas?

We go away in our campervan a lot. I eat the same food I do at home and this always happens to me for the first few days.. No explanation, but it does settle down again... all I put it down to is a change of routine ??

if your morning numbers are much higher than usual , it could be from ysterdays proteins, if one eat much more protein that the body needs it will let the liver change those proteins to glucose ... so even proteins can be transformed into glucose.

most people with a rather sedentary lifestyle only needs about 0.6-0.8 grams of protein pro kg body weight.. so a person of 100 would need between 60 -80 grams of protein in total on a daily basis.

but there are so many different things that can raise fasting blood glucose among those are stress ... and not sleeping at home can be stressful to most people..

If I were you I would count my carbs and find out how low I must go to get a fasting glucose number that is under the prediabetic level.
you would be able to find that out by eating very low carb for about a week like starting under maybe 80 grams a day... if your numbers are normal aat 80 grams of carbs a day and 80 grams of proteins then you can try to go a little higher and see what happens, in that way you´ll find out what your personal level is where you can actually cope with the carbs without it making you ill or out of balance in blood glucose..

I suspect it is more to do with the change of routine (and maybe the higher carb sausages), than anything sinister.
You will probably find things revert to normal as soon as you get home to your own kitchen.

Hi @Freema

Protein amounts are not high. I am already eating very low carb 20-30g per day max (and have been since early Jan). Any lower and I won't be eating vegetables at all - and I'm not going there!

Hoping it's just a change of routine as suggested by others.

Adrenalin and change of routine messes with my bgs.
Thanks @ickihun - change of routine seems to be the consensus. Will report back. Tomorrow isn't quite back to routine as I have a couple of meetings outside the office in the morning, which will include lunch at an as yet unknown venue. Tuesday onwards should be good.

I had exactly the same thing happen - I was diagnosed on November, went low carb and everything seemed to settle down wonderfully - than suddenly I was getting numbers all over the place, both higher and lower than usual.
I put it down to starting to do some exercise, changing my routine, having more energy and doing more housework - and also my metabolism adjusting to the changes I'd made. By the end of January things were settling down again and I got a real shock when I got my blood test results, so it was obviously nothing bad that had been happening. I hope that it is the same for you.

Hi @Resurgam - thanks. Let's hope it's the same for me. I did come down to 6.0 after dinner yesterday (and I had one reading of 5.0 while I was away), but back up to 7.7 this morning.

@Kristin251 - don't think it was more protein than usual, perhaps a little more at breakfast, but certainly not at other meals.

I was definitely doing more exercise while I was away so maybe that had something to do with it.

HbA1c at the end of next week, results by early March, so all will be revealed about how I've been doing.

When being away from home and your normal environment and routine, Even a change in the normal alignment North South East west of your sleeping direction can add stress and change how well you sleep this could possibly also alter your BG levels.

Hotel sausages normally produce morning readings of about 8.5 for me. Straight back to normal when I get home. I travel quite a lot, so have got used to it.

Wow - a 5 - I have never seen a 5 - you seem to have made a real difference to your daily numbers as a whole, I hope that you see a significant lowering of HbA1c numbers at your next blood test.

Thanks @Resurgam - my next test is a week on Friday, but I won't get the results until the Thursday after that as the doctor that is dealing with all this is only part-time. Fingers crossed!

Thanks all @No2D @JohnEGreen and @Providence 62 - I think all of your comments ring true. I did sleep well while away, ugh my routine was different so probably had an effect, and Imthink I'll try and avoid hotel sausages in future unless they're the least worst option.
