Old/new diagnosis

Hi

My name is Jackie and as the title says, I was apparently ‘diagnosed’ back in June but only officially found out on Monday after a few confusing months and countless discussion with my GP surgery.

I was tested for GD in my first pregnancy 15 years ago and found not to have it and went on to deliver a 10lb 6oz baby girl. My second pregnancy 3 years later I was tested again and found to have it this time. I attempted to
control by diet but ended up injecting insulin. This one was smaller (9lb 1oz but three weeks early) . GD went away after birth.

Over the following years, I have had annual checks which have always come back in the early 40s. This year, after a very stressful 4 months where my eating patterns were all over the place, my HbA1c came back at 51 and I had to repeat after 2 weeks. In that time I managed to reduce it by 2 and lost 2kg. I was sent away from the the nurse after agreeing to attempt to reduce by diet. At no point in that conversation did I get told that I officially had type 2 diabetes! No referral to anyone else, no explanation of the appointments that would come in the post or anything. I now know that 48 is the cut off point!

So almost 6 months later and I’m now due another test to see if that number has reduced. I have been on LCHF since that appointment (not fully to begin with as it took a bit of time to get used to) but have lost around 15kg in that time and feel great. I have been lurking here for a while and have taken lots of tips from you all along the way

The weight loss has slowed and I’m wondering how to kickstart it. Any ideas would be very much appreciated

Thanks

Hello and welcome,

That is v very frustrating to not tell you straight away. Congratulations on your achievements to date- they are fantastic! I think the first thing to do is wait for your next test- weight loss is great but the first aim is the blood sugar levels. Do you test regularly?

Even while the weight loss has slowed it is still about 1/2 a kilo a week- depending on how much you have to lose that is really great and will probably stop you from having as much saggy skin.

Congratulations on a great result and welcome to your first post on the forum.

Hi and welcome!

congratulations on your weight loss (assuming it was what you wanted), and I expect you HbA1c will show a marked improvement. :D

Thanks VashtiB

I don’t test my bloods at all-again, I received no information about testing nor any other dietary advice except ‘just eat three small meals a day’ which is as useful as a chocolate teapot!

I hope the blood test bears out the changes I have made!

Please let us know the results. Doing your own finger prick tests would give you great guidance, before eating and then again 2 hours after, and you will learn how the foods you eat affect you.
