Hi,
I am led to believe that there are good and not so good Omega3 pills available on the market. Someone suggested not just ALA but EPA and DHA too if anyone can advise please as im unsure. If anyone could also advise best place on high street to purchase please. Noticed Boots have them but don't know if they contain EPA or DHA; similarly are they the best price?.
Thanks

Hi Billder

My answer is that I have no idea! :)

You will have to do some research and let us know if you find out anything interesting. You can look these things up onthe net nowadays though as many suppliers now sell that way and list ingredients, prices etc.

Why not just ask your Gp to prescribe you Omacor, a high strength Omega 3 capsule. I take 2g daily and have felt the benefits for quite some time now. As a Diabetic on Meds I get them free. :D

Ken,

We had a similar discussion about Omega 3/cod liver supps on another thread a little while back. As you know I take a high strength cod liver oil in liquid form, max strenght of 2 teaspoons a day. I did ask my gp about Omacor last week at my check-up, he looked this up and said it was not suitable/prescribed for patients with joints problems etc, more for patients with heart conditions, so suggested I stick with cod liver oil.

Regards

Hi Nigel.
Yes, you are right. I suppose I should have mentioned I get mine for protection of Heart problems.

There is nothing to stop a GP prescribing it though, it is still high strength Omega 3. Works better than any of the shop bought varieties. Maybe a little gentle persuasion might not go amiss.

I have a friend who asked for it saying he was paying through the nose for over the counter stuff and had heard it would be good for him. The GP rolled over and gave him the scrip.....luck of the draw I suppose.

Ray, You could well be!

The taste of it just takes me back to childhood and my mother spooning it into us kids. Revolting!

My wife thinks I'm weird - I love cod liver oil. Am I alone in this?

I drink some each day.

Ray,

No you're not alone, I love it too.

I drink it straight from the bottle every day, to wash down my 4 pills (2 x acai high strength and 2 x benfotaimine).

I have the Seven Seas extra high strength bottles - yummy.

No you are not Ray! :D

I've been taking cod liver oil for 20 years in capsule form, and only the last few months by liquid. Funny enough, at first I would take 2 teaspoons each day and immediately eat something straight away to take the taste away, now I don't mind it and have no problem at all.

In December I started to take the high strength cod liver oil, and strangely it doesn't seem to taste as strong as the normal version. Wife can't stand the smell of the stuff, keeps well away for a hour or two when I have taken it.

I'm looking for a source of high strength Omega 3 myself. I've been reading up on treating high triglycerides with Moga 3 and it sounds very promising. But the information I have is that you need a high quality Omega 3 that contains ALA, EPA AND DHA.

Found a good source of hi-q Omega 3 .

Apparently, the oil that fish produce comes from the Krill that they eat...

I am not sure, but I think all cod liver oil contains EPA and DHA. The brand I use 'Seven Seas High Strength' says that it contains 50% more Omega-3 than standard cod liver oil. As it is a well known brand, and isn't to expensive compared with others makes, it is my first choice.

Taking cod liver oil liquid, as opposed to capsule form, is apparently the best way to take it for maximum benefit.
