Omeprazole

My doctor has just put me on omeprazole, I take one in the morning and one at tea time and my sugar level has risen through out the night plus during the day. Has anyone else found this? Been in a new job for 6 weeks and struggling to get sugar levels sorted as gone from running around all day to sitting down. Been doing fasting test etc as on a pump. Been putting insulin up and it does not seem to be having any effect what so ever. Any advice gratefully received. Have been diabetic for 30 years times like this does your head in!!!!

Whilst a search I made of side effects to omeprazole does not immediately suggest it as a cause of high bsls, could your symptoms have been mistaken for something else more serious which could elevate your bsls?
A call to your prescriber/GP/doctor asap sounds to be best to make sure of this
Also could rising bsls all be the stress of s new job Plus, as you say, the change from running all day to sitting ?
Also when I have fasted for a test on the pump's basal settings I start to develop ketones at about 16 hour mark and my specialist has said that the ketones could affect the BSLs so stick to 12 hours fasts to check settings. A 12 hour fast, a break of 12 hours at least then a 12 hours fast to cover the other 12 hour span of basal settings, Say 1) 12 pm to 12 am, then wait ...and 12 am to 12 pm. another time.
During stress (and you will need to check with your doctor) I increase pump basal and bolus 20% as a start, nothing less works for me. Then another 20%, then 10 to 20% etc. BUT CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR about BSLS and other possible causes first.> Best Wishes

Yep been there too! The PPI meds reduce stomach acid so things take longer to digest, including meds, I was switched from standard Metformin to a generic substitute called Sukkarto, and I found that the enteric coating on the new pills was not dissolving. Turns out the manufacturer uses shellac varnish to provide slow release but in my case I had no release at all, so I had to go back to GP to get my proper meds re-installed pdq.

Other things get affected by the Prazoles. Vitamin B absorbtion gets interferred with, and in my case led to iron deficiency anaemia. Iron tabs to overcome anaemia are contraindicated with the PPI meds too so I was adding necessary expense to my prescription simply because of the PPI without benefitting from it. I fought back by moving the PPI and the heart med it was prescribed for to being last thing at night, and so far it is working out, I would suggest that you ask the GP to consider using Lansoprazole instead since it is not so agressive. Omeprazole ist the worst one of the family for interfering with other meds

Of course here in the UK we don't bother with what the Americans think of how to treat patients, so here in the UK there are no warnings in place and these PPI's are considered to be very safe and very cost effective, according to NICE.

Edit to say that I am a T2D and not an insulin user, so cannot comment on this.
