Hi All
Can any one tell me (sacreligious as it may be!) whether it is possible to do a bit of low carb then a few days not etc etc? I guess it might confuse your body? When I was at Slimming World many years ago they did this by having green days and red days for low carb or low fat (I think).

Low-carb for diabetes is a lifestyle, not a "diet". Carbs affect your blood glucose more or less immediately; if you did 3 days on, 3 days, off your bg levels would be all over the place (and you wouldn't lose any weight!)

The odd day, eg Christmas, birthday etc, won't hurt, as long as they're not too frequent, but you're now into controlling carbohydrates for life. It's not too bad - there are still lots of nice things you can eat. Keep testing to see how various foods affect your bg levels and you'll soon work out an eating plan for yourself.

For example - I had a cheese omelette for breakfast today; lunch will be tuna salad with mayonnaise and lots of salad veg; supper will be roast turkey with broccoli, cauliflower and leeks. I might have a couple of oatcakes (5grams of carb each), a bit of cheese and a few nuts if I want a snack.

That lot will give me about 30 - 35 grams of carbohydrate. You'll notice I'm not on a low-fat diet - my choice, it suits me but it doesn't suit everybody.

I might add a small serving of peach slices, in fruit juice, with cream as a rare treat, which will up my total carbs for the day but which doesn't seem to affect my bg too much.

I've also found that my real favourite, Green & Black's 85% proof chocolate, contains less than 2g carb per 10g. I sometimes have that just before bed and it seems to keep my bg stable overnight.

So you see, low carb isn't deprivation - it's just thinking outside the box! :D

Thanks Viviennem. I was just trying to think of a way to have my cake and eat it, if you'll pardon the expression. I have ordered a load of books on vegetarian low carb dieting and a carb counter, but then I thought about how much I rely on high carb foods and was hoping there might be away to do both! Totally unrealistic but worth an ask.
I shall do some more thinking. The weight loss from low carbing is very tempting. Maybe I'll start gradually weaning myself off carbs with a view to going the whole way in a few weeks....

Have you checked out the food forum? There are loads of good recipes in there. I noticed someone has just posted a low carb chocolate cake recipe which sounds yummy. So you could have your cake and eat it :D .........just perhaps not all of it in one go

Hi Paltry, sounds like your a veggie?

If so there are many very low carb protein foods for vegetarians.

Quorn is it's many guises
Asda and Tesco do their own brand stuff

If you want to treat yourself you can but you should still count the carbs and try and cut down on other meals that day.

Hi Paltry

Rose Ellis (is that right? famous vegetarian cook, author of The Bean Book) has written a low-carb diet book for vegetarians. Sorry I can't remember it's title!

Thanks for all the advice. I had ordered the Rose Elliot book as I lived on her Bean Book as a student and still dip into it. That was one reason why I was unsure about a low carbs diet.

I shall certainly check out the low carb chocolate cake. That certainly sounds too good to be true! Or is it made out of courgettes....?
