I have finally managed to view my results online from my surgery and I am not a happy bunny!
In May 2016 my HbA1c was 54, the result was listed as satisfactory and the action is - nothing further needed.
If something had been done then would I be registering 11 months later in April with a HbA1c of 79!

Blimey. That is one huge mistake. Were there any earlier blood glucose readings?

No earlier bg readings only later one in March 2017 where my HbA1c was then 78 and then in early April put on Gliclazide 80mg a day after two months dropped to 40mg a day and HbA1c was 60. Three month is this week so going back for a blood test on Thursday.

Your online records should also show who made the May 2016 entry .. and I would want to know why ..
Having said that, since your 3 monthly review is due the most important issue is how you are doing now .. have your BG readings been coming down ?
 
I had a similar thing happen to me. Makes you mad I know, but the thing is to now move on from where you are and not be too concerned or stressed about what might have been.I wish you the best for the future.

Filed by my doctor no less. BG readings are coming down and are consistently between 5.00 - 7.00 mmol so I am happier with that.

Yes you are right, no point being stressed over something that happened over a year ago that I can't change. Maybe he got fed up with me as I had a cholesterol level of 7.00 and I flatly refused to go on statins.

I also wouldn't stress, but next time you see him I would certainly point it out to him. It may shock him into being more careful in future.

Yet another incident that proves we should never rely on what we are told by our medical teams - always, always get test results on-line if available or in print outs if not. Not just glucose stuff but all the other markers from cholesterol to full blood counts and kidney/liver functions. They are too fond of saying "fine" simply because they are within the standard, yet may be teetering on the very edge of not being within standard.

That's because everyone on this forum is singing from a different song sheet to the one used by our GPs. We can't blame them, their hands are tied. It's called NICE, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.

I haven't checked the numbers exactly but I think this document will explain why further action wasn't taken. It's section 1.6.5 Targets. The numbers you quote may not be exactly within the ranges specified but sometimes I think there's an element of allowing for inaccuracies and they might not worry about the odd mmol/mol here or there.

Doctors use the HbA1c as the gold standard, despite it's inaccuracies. I usually have one annually, not 6 months or a year because they know I monitor continuously. I did go through a patch of complacency and got a shock last christmas but while I monitor continuously I don't have to worry too much about the HbA1c and certainly wouldn't rely on it as the only way of measuring my BG. Surely your personal BG monitoring must have warned or indicated an HbA1c that you wouldn't like.

So really between May 2016 and April this year your regular BG monitoring would have shown some issues. A good reason why monitoring is necessary.

1.6.9 looks very interesting.

I like this one because I fall within this but my nurse hasn't listened to me and brushes my concerns away because my HbA1cs are still under the 48 target, so perfectly acceptable.

1.6.4 Investigate unexplained discrepancies between HbA1c and other glucose measurements. Seek advice from a team with specialist expertise in diabetes or clinical biochemistry. [2015]

Hi, I was not monitoring my bg until 3 months ago as I did not know it was a problem. I went to the doctor as I had sinusitis that would not clear and asked for a blood test and that came back as HbA1c 79, I was immediately put on Gliclazide 80mg a day, after 2 months it was reduced to 40mg a day and HbA1c had dropped to 60. Going back tomorrow for another blood test.

Apologies, I had thought that you had had a diagnosis of being diabetic, hence the HbA1c in May 2016. Obviously you would have been monitoring once prescribed Gliclazide, especially as this can cause hypos.

I expect you will have to ask your GP why an HbA1c of 54 didn't make them think "diabetes", although there are other blood tests that are used as well as the HbA1c. You're going to have to ask the doctor. At least you know now and can take the necessary actions.

Not sure if I missed it but, whilst there is a section on controlling Blood Pressure, I can't see anything about controlling cholesterol

Daphne917 I have never taken anything for my cholesterol, I keep very active and have not found it to be a problem in my health, I am more worried about my diabetes than my cholesterol.

Sorry wasn't specifically aimed at you but just an observation that I couldn't find anything re cholesterol control etc in the document as Drs are always trying to make diabetics take statins whether they need them if not!
 
My favourite response to blood tests is abnormal but expected. I work in a GP surgery so understand but as more people go online I can imagine the responses we will get. For me access to my results allows me to start a conversation so I knew from testing my sugars were rising. My Hba1c was repeated and had risen from 48 to 54 - still not dreadful but for me the wrong direction and a sign medication was no longer working so I discussed options and because of family history etc chose to move to insulin. I don't disagree that GPs and nurses can and do get it wrong but unfortunately the educated patient who goes onto forums and takes an interest is still very much a rarity and like most of us it's sometimes easier to go with the majority.

If you are in England, your surgery will be able to tell you if it puts test results on line. Not all surgeries do, although they were supposed to do this before May 2016. If your surgery does this, they will tell you how to register for this. For me, I was given a consent form to sign and had to provide some ID. I was then given a special code. This consent form then went off to the GP who authorised it. A day or two later I could access everything.
