This morning I had an oral glucose tolerance test. I took my metre along with me. According to my metre, before the test I was 5.3, two hours after the test I was 7.2.

Can anyone give me an indication of what this might mean? I am not diabetic (but have GAD antibodies).

Thanks

Lesley

Was the test after fasting?

Diagnosed 13/4/16: T2, no meds, HbA1c 53, FBG 12.6, Trigs 3.6, HDL .75, LDL 4.0, BP 169/95, 13st 8lbs, waist 34" (2012 - 17st 7lbs, w 42").

6/6/16: FBG AV 4.6, Trigs 1.5, HDL 2.0, LDL 3.0, BP 112/68, BPM 66, 11st 11lbs, waist 30".

Regime: 20g LCHF, run 1 mile daily, weekly fasting.

Yes

Yes it was after fasting so I did my own test at baseline and two hours after and a few inbetween but the lab test will be based on the 2 hour reading

Seems like whatever is happening with the GAD antibodies, you are showing no signs of progression to LADA if your glucose response is still normal. How long since you had an antibody test?

So a fasting BG reading of between 4-7 is considered normal. +2 hours up to 8.5 is the upper limit. :)

About 18 months ago. I've had three positive GAD tests in the last 5 years. Do you think the lab results would differ much from my metre?

Unless there's a serious problem with your meter, hopefully the results would be close. Must be frustrating having this hanging over you :(

Yes it is because if I thought the antibodies were active I would really tighten up my glycaemic control. At the moment I am not really looking after my diet. A kick up the butt would help tremendously!

I was surprised as I had a reading of 9.1 on my metre the night before after eating chocolate.
Pure glucose can tend to read lower for some people than starch/grain does. Lots of discussion about this recently on the forum. But it's good that you're tracking your results.

That sounds interesting. .. forgot to mention i felt my eyes were a bit blurry after about half an hour into the test
Shame you didn't have access to a CGM or Libre while you were doing the test. Two hourly measurements don't really tell you very much.

I totally agree!
There are indeed several questions and how you react to the glucose.
Different types of blood glucose disorders and metabolic syndrome conditions have different responses to the test.
Did they take intermediary blood samples and readings?

What were the readings in between? I know when a glucose tolerance test is done on me, my 2hr value is 15.5mmol/l and it peaks around 20mmol/l and then at 4,5,6hrs falls to below 3mmol/l

Wow...that's a big but I am sure welcome correction at 4,5,6 hours:)

HI Kevin, well that's the problem, if it peaks high and falls fast at worst a fitting hypo. I regularly have a blood glucose of 13mmol falling to 2.1mmol and thats on a low carb diet! Never mind a OGTT, so am banned from drving. Yet my HbA1c will come in as non diabetic as it's a mean of the endless highs and lows. I was diagnosed with diabetes and rebound hypoglycemia in 2003. Keep running :-)

Hi @Blip22,

I have Reactive Hypoglycaemia.
We have our own forum and would really like to hear your story.
There are a couple on the forum that have both RH and T2.

Hope to hear from you.

0815: 5.3 Before drink
0830: 7.5 After drink
0915: 8.3
0945: 6.9
10.15: 6.2
1030: 7.2

1030: 7.2

In my experience they are good figures!
No real quick spike and a gentle return to normal pre test reading.
The only anomaly is the last reading, which went back up by 1.0mmol in fifteen minutes, but could have been a rogue reading maybe!
Did you get an explanation for the last reading?
Was it your monitor or the hospital monitor?
