I've just started taking orlistat tablets and was wondering if anybody else was?! Any side effects? And how are you doing? I'd love to hear how everybody else is doing.

The only side effect I got was the obvious one if I ate a meal with fat in it. Which can be avoided by eating a very low fat meal. I stopped taking them because I thought just eating better would be a far healthier way of losing weight (haven't quite managed to fully improve my diet yet but at least it's better than it was!). The 'side effect' stopped as soon as I stopped the tablets.

Bullies and sockpuppets. Not being able to eat I want.
My wife has been on orlistat for the last 5-6 years. The first two years she lost 5 stones and then the tablets stopped working. Her GP took her off for a year and then started her back on them again because she put 3st back on again. She hasn't had any problems herself but she was warned that the side effects were "severe stomach pains" and "uncontrollable diarrhoea" and to stop taking them immidiately if she had any of these side effects. Apparently she was the third person the Doc prescribed these tablets to and the only one who did not suffer any side effects at all.

Thanks Ericd. congratulate yor wife on doing so well. I've only been on them a few days but no rushing to the toilet yet though some days I do feel more bloated than normal and find it hard to go!! sorry to bring the conversation down to toilet level. Sounds like they do work though? My sister has said that I won't lose weight taking them and I would love to prove her wrong. :D

I've been on orlistat for about 3 weeks now and so far have lost roughly 5lbs. So my scales tell me. mine not the doctors. Feel better too. I suffered from severe bloating, constipation, bad wind, feeling like i'd eaten a ton of cement and as thoughs someond had put my body in a vice and the whole world was pressing in on me. Now I physically feel lighter, no bloating for a few days and constipation gone for now. So some good news for a change? :D

Hi Gillyh,i've just been given these tablets would just like to know how you are doing on them now a few more weeks have passed and have they affected your blood readings,my doctor said they might bring my readings low and to test myself and keep an eye on them, well done on your weight loss :D ,shan x

Hi shandromeda.... the tablets are still working. I've lost roughly a stone so far. If you have any type of meal above 5% fat you do have bad case of the 'trots'...sorry. I've gotten rid of 90% constipation, bloating and about 70% of ibs problems. I do eat less too and buy food below 5% fat. It makes you appreciate food more and I've found that I cannot eat greasier food or sweeter food as it upsets my stomach. Got my fingers crossed for you taking them. My target if I achieve the 1st target set by my doctor is to lose another 5stones. I can dream, can't I?

I was told to only take them twice a week as I'm type 2 and don't need to so often as I was checking. Feel fine but better check when I get hom...on overtime at moment. Weighed myself this morning and looks like it's almost a stone now but doctors scales will probably say different. I've got till end of May to lose 16lbs. Keep it up Shan. well worth it if it agrees with you. I can see a difference and so can work colleagues. :D

definately the bad side of orlistat. That's happened to me about 5 times since I've been on them. Sunday roast is the culprit for me. I love my meat and veg then and done in the oven....too much oil!! Besides that bad experience how's it going? My weight keeps going up and down the last few days. Went shopping last week for new underwear!! Everythings dropping off me....literally!! :D

Hi Gillyh,i'm a veggie so don't have that problem with the roast's :D ,but i had to give up cheese :(
but it will be worth it in the end,i've not been on them a full week yet but i've lost 2lb,i saw it on the news today about them selling Orlistat over the counter but not as strong as the one's we take, they said you can't take them if your a diabetic,i know you have to be carefull on them but this is where i think a doctor should be the one to get them from,as we know diabetic's can take them by a doctor, shan x

My doctor said it was okay for me to take the orlistat despite being diabetic. I just have to be careful. I'm seeing the surgery nurse on Friday to see how much I've lost. Since last time I've lost roughly 5-6lbs but their scales say differently. Then 4 weeks later I have to see the doctor again to see if I can still carry on taking them. If not I'm going to tell him to refer me to the weight clinic at the local hospital. Sister goes there and has lost nearly 50lbs since last June. She's not on tablets andis doing really good. They offer orlistat though and if you lose a lot of weight will offer an operation to get rid of the excess skin left behind!! I'm determined to lose more weight as it should help my asthma, blood pressure and diabetes. Keep up the good work though Shan, let me know how you're getting on. :D

Thanks cugila. Have to see doctor on 29th May to see if I can carry on with the tablets. If so, good. If not I'll get him to refer me to the local weight clinic at the hospital. They offer them there and a lot more help. Shame the doctor in to carrying on when I see him. Nasty I know but they keep on at me to lose weight. I saw my records on screen Friday and the weight they think I should be in ridiculous. Under 70kg!! No way will I ever get to that weight. :x

Thanks from me too Cugila :D .I know what you mean Gilly the dr's or nurse are quick to point and shout get your weight down but when you do try to help yourself and finally some thing starts to work they soon take it away again  ,i asked for a gastric band twice and two dr's said they would look into it and they never did,i tried Orlistat before years ago but gave it up as i had bad IBS at the time but i only get small attacks now and then,it seems to be working this time round so far but i'm having to put a lot of work in myself as well. Some of my friends wonder what i do eat as we can't have sugars, fats, and i'm a veggie but my front lawn is shorter  ,shan x
