Type 2
At least once a week I go out for coffee with friends. I am type 2 and wondered is it better to eat a pastry or a cake or scone.
I have started drinking latte with whole milk or americano with pouring cream.
help always appreciated
Thanks

When I go out for coffee, I just have coffee. I really don't feel the need to eat with it.

Ideally you break the connection in your mind between drinking coffee and having a sweet snack altogether. But if the flesh is weak, take ONE Nairn biscuit with you for dunking.

I usually just have black coffee - I keep a little tiny bar of 80% chocolate in my bag just in case but usually find it a few weeks later in crumbs lol - Americano with cream is good but be careful with lattes - lots of carbs in milk so if you are also going to "treat" yourself to something carby/sugary at the same time it may raise your blood sugar higher than you like

If you really have to have something I sometimes have half of the bottom half of my husbands plain scone - no jam or cream just a bit of butter

I don't have any of the sweet cakey stuff anymore. The affect on my sugar levels is too dramatic and I don't want to risk the possible long term damage. I know other people like the odd treat and I have fallen off the wagon when desperate for a sweet taste but generally I wouldn't choose any of those options. If I was at a girly get together and didn't want to feel left out I would take some of my 80% choc in my handbag hee hee.

As others have said milk is pretty carb heavy (the lactose is a sugar) so Americano with cream if necessary , most places have it. Coffee shops are carb city so personally I try to avoid them and certainly never eat anything there.

Double / triple espresso, black and with a nice foam on top keeps me happy. :)

Do you have a meter to test your own blood glucose?
If not, i suggest you get one, and test your blood glucose before your coffee and sweet snack, then every 20 mins or so until your bg returns to normal.

Once you know what your old habit was doing to you, you may find it surprisingly easy to change to new ones! :D

It would also mean you can test to see what your Americano with cream is doing, and if you can add a small cake...

Good luck with the testing. It is a real voyage of discovery.

Eating /drinking out is always a risky business as you are never quite sure what the intake is.when i meet up with friends and family for coffee i just have a coffee and tend to shy away from eating their as it always tends to be convenience foods rather than something nutritious from a diabetics point of view.IE sandwich pasta cake etc

I would try and just stick to a coffee, either with cream or black. If you give in and have a cake with it you probably wouldn't really enjoy it now as you would be thinking about how much damage it could be doing you. My favourite snack is a small square of 90% cocoa chocolate and a Brazil nut, perhaps you could take something like that. Or meet for lunch, a nice salad goes down well. Don't let Diabetes spoil your social life.
