Out of curiosity and having bg meter to hand I tested my wife and daughters blood glucose levels today before and after eating.
I was surprised but not overly concerned when my wife's level was at 8.1 2 hours after eating.

But my daughters level of 10.6 was somewhat high I think but am unsure whether a non diabetic would normally have a level that high or not do you think we should be concerned.

Not necessarily - non diabetics will spike too, but the difference between them and us is that their bodies will deal with carbohydrate intake correctly, our diabetic bodies, don't or can't.

If you are in any way concerned about your daughter, then you should check with your GP.

Was that at 2 hours as well? Sounds a little high but a check (if Q1 assumption is correct) might be in order at 3 hours but non diabetics can fall back quickly

I suppose I should add that you can't really come to any definite conclusions with just the one set of tests, you'd need to do a number of them with different meals, and consider how high or low they are in carbohydrates. And as Mike suggested test at different times, e.g. 1, 2, and 3 hours after eating to see what's going on.

Thank you for your replies they have been very helpful.
I think I will try again in some days on the lines of the advice given I do understand that it would be unwise to try and conclude a lot from this but in my daughters case it maybe be helpful.

She has since told me she has been getting dizzy spells and is urinating more often, this together with the fact she is overweight gives me a little cause for concern and there is history of type1 and type2 in both my family and my wife's if the results are repeated will suggest she speaks with her GP.

I'm sorry but I would be a bit concerned and test again a few times. 10.6 seems high to me. (250ish?) even for a non diabetic and given the family history I would want to nip it in the bud but that is ME.

I think you're right Kristen251.

I must admit we had the same meal tested at the same time 2 hours after eating and her reading was higher than mine.

I have already made a strong suggestion that she makes an appointment to see her doctor and am going to test again tonight to see if it is high again very worrying.

Make sure hands are washed before the test, your daughter may have had contaminated her blood sample - a while back I tested my daughter and wife and was shocked that my daughter had a reading in the teens, a quick wash of hands and a re-test rectified the situation much to my relief!

Hope further test results are OK for you guys.

Thanks slip but no it's not the case here all proper procedure was followed hands washed new lancet etc. And of course I am not going to jump to any conclusion from one solitary test, though did test before and after meal.

I don't want to worry you John but I don't think 250 is normal at all for anyone without some BS disregulation. I would keep an eye on it.
How old is our daughter and what was the meal?

I agree it is high - but if you are doing a conversion to mg/dl, I think it is about 191 (the conversion factor is ~18)

Daughter is 37 the meal was a meat and gravey pie = 40g carbs and a small serving of mashed sweet potato a bit high in carbs I know

If you are worried do a test first thing in morning before eating or anything. If its 6 or above go see the GP as others advise.

Thanks steve will do
Her BG tonight well over 2 hours after eating much lower at 6.6.
oh by the way she knows I am posting here and has no objection.

Her fasting blood today at 12:10 pm was 5.4 so not so bad mind you that's after well over 12 hours since she had eaten any thing.

Sounds to me like she may have a little 'something' going on. If it were my daughter I would continue to teat after certain meals and perhaps jump on the low carb wagon?
40g carbs is not a lot for a non diabetic to process IMO. It does sound like something she could control through some lifestyle changes if she si willing and you have a meter to help

Testing after eating is simply not reliable as it will be affected by too many variables. Even if you go see the GP they will want to do the fasting BG check in the morning. That can then be supplemented with the proper diagnostic tests.

Ps did the same to my partner and she was just above the pre-diabetes levels so now trying to sort that out by low carbing etc.

I don't understand why you say testing after meals is not reliable? That is the most reliable and the only way to see how foods/ meals effect BS. There are always variables but there are also parameters to stay within and going outside of those parameters means further testing should be done. When do you feel the most reliable time to test is?

In the context of this post and determining if there is diabetes then stick to a fasting BG test.

If diagnosed then yes, pre and post meal testing is critical to understanding profiles for different food combinations and impact on your BGs.

When I as diagnosed, it was based on two fasting tests over 7. That was the test the doc used rather than testing after food.
