Hi I keep getting a painful red swelling in my feet for no reason, I am type 2 diabetic and I am on metformin. I had back surgery a year ago which has left me with some nerve damage down half of my left foot on my little toe side.i keep getting these flare ups, I get swelling on either foot, it can be so painful I can hardly walk, just wanted to know if this is common for diabetics and what and why this is happening.

Hi @DOLLFACE50 and welcome to the forums. I am sorry this is happening to you.

Just a heads up that forum rules don't allow us to diagnose, though people certainly tell you if they've experienced something similar.

I guess my first thought is that though there are various foot issues that are common for diabetics, not all health issues are diabetic related. Have you spoken to your GP?

Oh sorry just wanted to find out if anyone else has experienced the same thing as me and to see if they have been given a reason just incase this is diabetic related. I will be going to see my gp as well.

No need to be sorry, the forums are here for support and for sharing info, and I'm very glad that you are seeing your GP. I will be interested to see if anyone has had a similar experience, whether it's diabetes related or not.

Hi, I'm not going to try to tell you what you might or might not have.

But here's my experience: I have some residual neuropathy, caused by T2 diabetes, these days just a mild tingle at worst. Four years ago it was so bad it prevented me from sleeping. It was more a burning sensation and was much less bad when standing up. No problem weight-bearing.

I also have had gout. That was totally different - accompanied by swelling, reddening and absolutely intense pain. Couldn't bear to move my foot through the air let alone stand on it. Fortunately nothing since 2019.

Naproxen worked for me for immediate relief from the gout, along with some industrial pain relief, and I think low-carb/weight loss has also helped immensely in preventing anything since.

I'd advise you to see your GP. If it should happen to be gout, you may need medication (and pain relief) that you can only get on prescription.

It might be worth while getting the opinion of a Podiatrist. They are the experts in this field. Do some homework first to find out what additional services they provide. I've had excellent treatment from them for similar issues.

Mountain out of mole hill makers ,queues , crowds , shopping on a Saturday hmm just shopping I guess no matter what day it is
I have recently had a problem with my left foot (I only have one)the pain was excruciating and my foot was red and swollen . Went to podiatrist and at first they were a tad unsure but eventually diagnosed me with gout , I had to get a 3 day prescribed course or treatment from the doctors , cured it really quick, I would definitely take a trip to doctor and podiatrist if you can ,
As a side note I had gangrene in my foot before I had my leg amputated and the pain wasn’t as bad as the gout ,
