I have suffered from anxiety and panic attacks for a long time. For various reasons the last 18 months have been a struggle. I've eventually found / resorted to a medication that has brought my anxiety under control. Whenever I had a bad panic attack I would always check my sugars and invariably they were high. Today after a few weeks of no panic attacks, I've had 2 quite bad ones. Checked my bloods, 13.4. My bloods have been ok recently (usually 6-6.5 before dinner) (I'm type 2 on glucophage) but this weekend I have been very bad carb wise including eating a lot of fancy chocolates. (Does this have a knock on effect for the following days??). My doctor says high blood sugars don't cause panic attacks. Has anyone ever experienced this and linked high bs and panic attacks or am I looking for a link that isn't there? TFR

Hi @Emmar :) I would say there is a connection. Panic and anxiety can raise blood sugar levels. Also, anything that knocks you out of whack may trigger a panic. Perhaps you had a sugar rush from the chocolates and this has set you off. I hope you are over the worst now and enjoy a peaceful evening.

I have panic attacks. I would say, from my testing and observations, that the panic causes the high blood sugars, not the other way round, for me.

Low blood sugar levels however, which for me is under 4.5, can cause panicky feelings, shaking and irritability.

This is just my experience. And since lowering my carbs to help keep my blood sugar level more steady, the lower blood sugar problems have become less frequent.

Hugs for the panic attacks - they are horrid.

I Don, t suffer with panic attacks but I would imagine they would affect your levels.
I have bipolar and when I am manic or have mania, my levels rise

hi, I am new to this, I lost my mum 4 years ago and suffered really bad anxiety and panic attacks in the months after. these became really severe and I needed to go to the doctors before I did something dreadful to myself. they took some bloods at the time which had a hba1c of 48, I wasn't diabetic at this point. the doctor told me to get some exercise to combat the anxiety which I did, my returning hba1c 3 months later was ok. once I started to feel better (about 18 months later) the exercise, mainly cycling fell by the way side. the last 2 years have been a real battle with the anxieties retuning! to the point I revisited the doctor in November 2017. my blood pressure was dangerously high and I was put on medication for the blood pressure which has helped. they took some more bloods at the time which gave a hba1c of 52. I was told to return early January 2018 for more blood tests. this hba1c came back at 58 which confirmed type 2 diabetes. I am trying to control my blood sugars with diet alone at present which is going good although I am left feeling hungry. my anxieties have all but gone! I guess my point is that I am 100% positive there is a link
Regard Richard
