People that can't listen to other people's opinions.
People that can't say sorry.
Today i received a £70 parking fine from a private company for overstaying by 20 minutes. My reason for overstaying and not moving my car within the time allowed is that I was legally not safe to drive as I was abiding by the DVLA regulations and treating my hypo to raise it to 5mmols and then waiting 45 minutes to ensure the safety of me, my baby and other drivers.

I've not contacted parking company as im waiting on a call back from citizens advice about this however if I don't pay within 8 days they'll increase the charge and take it further....so was I to risk all these lives and break the law???? Confused.....

If its a private company that send youthreatening letters like from lidl or sldi.. you do not have to pay. They will not take you to court... I've been caught out once and stupidly paid and then twice more and ignored..... these "fines" came with the photos and threats of court action but stupidly after I paid first time I googled!!
They werent my fault either, my elderly mum caused me the hassle. The hypo not your fault either.

HOWEVER, if it was in a hospital carpark od county council run car park. Thats different. Pay....

You are placed with a Legal Dilemma, you were not fit to drive and needed to attend to the Hypo Like the others Here I would refuse to pay and let a judge decide if they dare go that far. They are hopin for you just to pay up.
The Laws in this country work on the basis that if they can get away with something i.e it's not illegal to fine you they will do it.

Just checking that people realise that this thread is nearly a year old, @stellson posted to say what the outcome was several pages ago and hasn’t logged in since mid November last year.

Seriously?
There are a lot more more serious problems diabetes can cause than having to pay a £70 fine! why can't you just accept it was a mistake and pay the fine and stop drawing attention to diabetic failings, You'll have people nudging each other saying ( He's a diabetic shouldn't be driving!)

Diabetes (but I may learn to love it)
You say a private company gave you the ticket, this is really important so please check. Have you received:-
1. A PENALTY charge notice, or
2. A PARKING charge notice.

The penalty charge notice is backed by law through the issuing authority (usually your local council), however a parking charge notice is not offered the same protection. Basically this is a private concern who are just trying to make money. Do not deal with them tgey have no legal redress against you

I have actually had two £60 parking fines from a private car park company and refused to pay and they just leave you alone as the legal issues cost more than it"s worth for them, I just find it a little sad that you have to use your diabetes as an excuse!

I think it sad when some one cannot differentiate between a justifiable action which is reasonable and one that is not and thereby an excuse for an unreasonable action.

In fact one that is not only reasonable but mandated by the rules of driving when a diabetic.

I think the excuse is treating the hypo, rather than diabetes per se. That's certainly my interpretation of the thread title.

Or being a responsible driver and adhering to the law.

Or are you suggesting that they should not have treated the hypo? Seems to be at odds with what you posted on another thread re driving "... killed some innocent pedestrians that would have looked good for the diabetic community in the papers the next day wouldn't it?"

Treating a Hypo is a reason, not an excuse.
An excuse is when you do not have justifiable grounds for your action. A reason is when you do

It seems like an excuse to me, why do you expect special treatment because you have diabetes, are you expecting everybody to feel sorry for you? diabetes can make life tough for you.

Just before we get lost in the semantics, worth pointing out that reason / excuse mean the same thing!

Excuse: noun, A reason or explanation given to justify a fault or offence.

So in this case I think it is perfectly fine to use the reason / excuse that you were having a hypo. As the alternative (driving off) would involve breaking the law and risking the safety of others.

If someone came on here and said I got a parking ticket, but i'm diabetic and life is tough I should be allowed to break these rules... Then 100% agree that is not acceptable!

It's the hypo not diabetes per se that is the (perfectly valid) reason / excuse here.

Why didnt the OP top up the parking ticket? Surely putting another half hour in the meter would have been the sensible thing to do? Unless it was a medical emergency requiring third party assistance to treat the hypo I cant see why having a hypo stops you from paying for parking.

Bye the way this is a very old thread so the matter would have been long resolved by now I should think but to answer your point the op did clarify that the car park had no facility for buying tickets as it was one where your car is registered automatically when entering and leaving.
