Patients Participation Group

I just get the impression that there has been some similar lethargy here in my local case.

But from a diabetes standpoint I am a lot more comfortable now after my appointment with my GP. So the need to influence via PPG has waned a little for me,

They discuss a lot more than diabetes. Organisation of how things are run, ideas for the appointments system, ideas for organising the mass vaccination programmes such as for flu, just about anything really.

Okay. So despite being a more elderly male, I have just been invited to the next PPG meeting. They obviously have enough chairs now. The letter included the following lines:

“We hope you are free to attend to get an understanding of the work of the PPG and what you can do to help to achieve its aims, ie:

1 Providing a forum for patients to collaborate with the practice and provide a patient perspective.

2 Promoting the wellbeing of patients and supporting the practice to provide a high quality of care and service delivery.

3 Enabling patients to influence local healthcare services

If you have an issue or topic that you would like raise and be involved in please let me know.”

To continue the monologue.

Today’s meeting was a little disappointing. This was at the other of the two surgeries. Again, very heavily oriented towards care of the elderly per se. It was quite difficult to introduce type 2 diabetes reversal into the mix.

However. For the Self Care event being run at the end of July there are plans to have a stall given over to diabetes (both T1 and T2) and plans to call upon opticians, podiatrists and pharmacists to lend their support in terms of early recognition. Also plans to engage the local pharmacists to headup free blood glucose testing with the public, with of course appropriate feedback. And again enlisting the support and presence of the GP’s in the quest.

The plans are there. Wether or not the plans come to anything, it remains to be seen.

@Listlad out of curiosity are they going to run the Self Care event during the week or weekend to enable younger patients who work or are at school etc to attend or is it aimed at the demographic of the majority of patients which is probably 65+.

It looks like a midweek event. I did call in to the last one back in November but I have been working part time only and went for a different reason altogether. I wasn’t looking for diabetes related support / help and there wasn’t any last time. But this time there will be (if it goes according to plan).

Thereby leaving it as an event that mostly only the older generation will be able to attend so focusing on elderly care is probably the correct thing to do. Perhaps if they held it at the week-end a more cross section of the practices’ patients would be able to attend.

I'm a member of my local PPG. We have a core group of around 12 members and perhaps a 100 'Virtual' members who receive a level of information and can choose to join the core group. We discuss most areas but the difficult bit is to avoid 'clinical' discussion as we would be seen to be conflicting with the GPs - a delicate balance. Probably the most useful aspect is having a table in the surgery reception every 2 weeks or so and providing information to attending patients or doing surveys. The response is normally very positive.

Yes, virtual PPG has cropped up. It is being launched. It does enable those that can’t make it during a week day, to make a contribution.

Yes indeed. Notwithstanding, the aim is to have a diabetes focussed stall there amongst the other stalls.
