I've just been chatting to my neighbour who said that he gave up eating meat a while ago. That in itself is not funny but his reason for doing so is which is to prevent getting diabetes! He explained to me that the reason people got diabetes was due to them eating too much meat which then got stuck in the gut so the sugar had nowhere to go but into the blood stream which then gave people diabetes. When I suggested that it was the sugar that was bad he told me that, as it was plant based, it was natural and, therefore, good for you!! I'd like to think he was joking but, unfortunately, he wasn't. However he doesn't have diabetes so perhaps his theory is right

That is funny. We all interpret things differently and respond differently.

My diet is 85% plant based and 15% protein. Protein raises me just as much and as fast as carbs so I need to keep my protein to .8g per kg to keep bs steady.
That being said, my diet is also 80% fat mostly coming from avocado, olive oil, mayo nuts and seeds which are also plant based as well as natural. So my plants are also very fat and fiber rich. Of course I have veggies to stomach tolerance which sadly isn't many.

Protein does elicit an insulin response almost as much as carbs so it's just lower and slower. Now that I'm on insulin I can clearly see the bs effect of protein.

I could never give up animal/ fish protein but I certainly don't need loads.

There certainly are a lot of misconceptions going around - never heard that one before though!

Recently I've heard some amusing comments myself. My pump has been misidentified as both a fashion accessory and a music player :hilarious::wacky: I wear medical ID wristbands/bracelet which very clearly state that I am T1D ("Alert! Type 1 diabetes", "Alert! Insulin dependent diabetic" and one with my mum's contact details), and somebody thought that they were fashion items :banghead: Despite me telling them twice that I was diabetic lol.

Maybe he is talking about the increased risk of developing types of diabetes because of a diet rich in animal products leads to obesity, heart disease etc.

How odd then that human beings have been around for so long...with many of our hominid ancestors surviving (and evolving) on diets that were at times very high in meat content. Perhaps he is - just daft?

Given your archaeology/anthropology background, if you haven't already seen them, you might find Dr Mike Eades' posts on ancestral human diet interesting:

It was in the Daily Mail in 2013, so it must be true!

It really was in the Daily Mail in 2013, but as I get older, I'm more and more concerned by those who only have newspapers as a source of "knowledge". Too many people are proud of the fact that they do not have any sort of computer. There may be a lot of rubbish on the internet, one has to be very careful about what one believes and do a bit of research to check stuff out, but where else does anybody do their research and get their facts correct? Libraries?

How do we get newspapers to print "information" accurately. They dumb it down enough as it is, but I just wish it was more accurate.

I'm just grateful that the internet has allowed us to become well informed.

He's not daft just one of these people who, once they get an idea in their head, seems incapable of listening to any counter arguments. Mind you he did see a UFO one night - sounded like a helicopter to me but you never know!!!
