Just had a real shock this morning - I was notified about an old friend - he was the lead guitarist of the band I used to be in back a few years ago and when we would tour he would take great care to make sure I was eating properly and managing my diabetes. At times it was annoying but a good person to have touring with you when dealing with a hectic schedule with odd hours. This guy was healthy - had a very fitness aware frame of mind and was also a **** good guitarist.

Anyway, I found out this morning that he's in a palliative care unit stricken down with cancer and doesn't have long to live. It's quite shocking - out of all of my past band members - me and our drummer - also a Type 1 - appear to be the healthiest of the bunch. Life is full of ironies .... doesn't make me feel any better though - it's important to live life to the fullest!

I posted yesterday that within a few hours, I had found that three people with connections to my family have found they have cancer!
Two of them terminal, one has a really good chance to survive the treatment!
Life sucks man!

Poor guy! Sorry to hear about your friend. Cancer is a cruel disease. It doesn't always see fitness or age or race. Some lead the unhealthiest of lives and go on to a ripe old age without any issues. Others can work daily on the health and still it strikes.

Make the most of every single day.

Indeed it does put things in perspective.
One of our regular forum members died very recently from cancer.
I was lucky, I survived, but having gone through it all in the 12 months immediately prior to my Type 2 diagnosis and still under treatment, my T2 diagnosis seemed insignificant and still does.

There are many worse things than diabetes. It may not be curable, but it is controllable.

Hi @fletchweb . Sorry to hear about your friend. It does make you realise how fragile we all are as human beings.
Diabetes is bad but it's definitely not the worst and with effort, time and a bit of luck can be controlled to a level that won't necessarily knock too many years off an individuals life expectancy.
Interesting how you say you and your drummer now appear to be the healthiest from your band. My take on being T1 is that it was a blessing in disguise. Yes it's a pain in the **** and I wouldn't wish it on anyone but I do seriously believe it's made me a healthier person.

So sad, too many lives are destroyed by that awful disease.

Sorry to hear the sad news of your friend, I have in recent years lost six family members due to cancer and had another survive cancer of the oesophagus it is an evil disease.
