Hi, my bg was 4`s and 5`s for 9 days now back in the 8`s last couple of days, i test before and after most meals (unless im at work and miss the 2 hour slot then dont bother) i was only diagnosed 5 weeks ago so as i learn my diet gets better and better, im going to the gym all week and swim every night so its weird why my bg levels have gone a bit wrong, 5 weeks ago was mid twenties so this is much better but i thought id cracked it :( could it be that its too soon to be doing that well and i am still settling in ?

Im type2 on 2g metformin Lisprinol for bp and atorvastatin for chol

Hi Andy
It's early days yet ..... good to hear that you are getting better results even if they aren't quite as you want them yet.

I would suggest keeping a diary - track what you eat - when and how hard you exercise ..... and your results as well. If you can see a pattern emerging you might get a clue as to what is happening.

Good luck !

Well if you want company Andy, I had a huge shock earlier when my pre dinner was 7.3 - I haven't had a pre dinner above 6 since the first week of diagnosis. Absolutely nothing to cause it, either, I'd had a bowl of zero carb chicken broth for lunch six hours previously, and had been to the gym in the afternoon. My post dinner levels have been correspondingly high - 8.3 at 1 hour and 7.4 at 2 hours - so back to baseline but WAY above what I have been for the last two months. Even my "dawn phenomenon" morning readings aren't that high (and in fact was quite good for me, this morning, at 5.3).

Got an Hba1C test on Monday as well :(

Type 2 on Metformin, diagnosed Jan 2013, ultra low carber, Hba1C at diagnosis 8% (11mmol), now between 5 and 6 mmol. 13kg lost so far :)

PS Sugars do go up when you're ill, might you be coming down with something?

Hi. Annoyingly the body doesn't seem to follow any rules. I frequently have strange results and you just have to get used to trying to average what you find. It will take a good few weeks for the body to settle when dieting and losing weight. Also exercise can cause some slightly odd results shortly after. Just be patient and I'm sure you will settle to some good values

There's just a glimmer of a possibility, for me, that my sugars go up if I'm losing weight? I keep records of both, and I have just checked and seen that days that have had unexpected highs have also been days where I've lost weight. My records aren't perfect, because I try not to weigh myself every day, but there does seem to be a correlation. I wonder whether fat being broken down can temporarily raise glucose or something? Well, it's a nice thought, anyway ;)

Or.....possibly hand lotion? Did a three hour test and was down to 5.1. Difference was that I washed my hands properly with hot water and soap and dried them thoroughly on a paper towel. Last two readings this evening I was a bit lazy and just licked my finger, and when I'd got home from the gym this afternoon, I had slathered hand lotion on

(Bet you're all finding this riveting lol. I have a certain amount of OCD problem ;) Back to your regularly scheduled thread.)

lol finzi, toady i am in the 9`s :( its going the wrong way, i have a back ache that ive had since a started swimming a couple of weeks ago, im used to pulled back muscles from being a stonemason but they usually are gone within a week, even the bad ones, this feels a little different across the middle of my back, i told the dn at my appointment in case it was the meds but she said it sounds like a muscle pull because its higher than my organs, do you think this could cause bloods to get higher? i am going to the gym alot, been yesterday and today, im eating very well i even left out the 2 slices of bread for lunch lately and am eatng salads (getting a bit bored of salad to be honest) chicken salad for dinner today woohoo, its my ten year olds birthday and was going to treat myself with a little piece of her cake (first cheat since diagnosis) but i think ill give it a miss with my readings higher :(

Oh sorry to hear that Andy :( I did learn from here that going to the gym a lot can raise your sugars temporarily. Also, are you drinking enough? Maybe if you're going to the gym you're getting a bit dehydrated and that can definitely make your readings higher. I don't think a pulled muscle would, though. I know it's easy to say, cos I hate having high readings and mine haven't been good today either, but remember that you are doing brilliantly compared to when you were diagnosed, you'd have been pleased with nines then, and it WILL go down again. This is a blip.

How about just having a spoonful of cake? Has it got butter icing? Aim for that bit of it rather than the sponge part because at least that's got plenty of fat to slow absorption. I tend to avoid treats too when my readings are high but I don't think a teaspoonful of anything could do that much harm. And drink lots - maybe that's it.

Lol I've just realised that I've got a back ache across the middle of my back too! Maybe that is it?! Back-related hyperglycemia ;)? Mines not from the gym though, it's from sitting around too much :(
