Glucose tolerance test
Fasting glucose 4.1 (73.8mg/dl), fasting insulin 21pmol
60 minutes glucose 12.9 (232.2 mg/dl), insulin 292.20 pmol
120 minutes glucose 10.2 (194.4 mg/dl), insulin 449.3pmol (should be below 189)

Also lastnight i had 1/2 slice of pizza and got blurred vison and very sleepy(which i always do following carbs) i took my reading at 1 hour it was 12.4, then at 2 hours it was 9, then at 3 hours it was 8.2. which im sure is normal right?

Usually my readings at 2 hours are below 11, its usually the readings in the middle that can go high depending on what ive eaten. I am very strict with my diet, i hardly eat any carbs because i always feel so unwell after.

Any replies would be greatly appreciated because ive been feeling very unwell for a while now and wonder of this has anything to do with it. thankyou

Hi bns

Not a doctor but to me those reads are a bit on the high side

I don't know what the GTT reads are meant to be but the 2 hours after food should be <8.5 according to NICE.

below 11 is not a good guide to use, as that is too high.

I'm assuming you're going back to gp to discuss the results

NICE guidelines for Type 2 diabetics:

Blood glucose levels:

4 - 7 fasting/before meals
less than 8.5, 2 hours after eating.

Your high insulin readings would suggest you have insulin resistance, which can be related to/part of Type 2 diabetes - normal levels of insulin can't get the glucose out of the blood and into your muscle cells, so your pancreas is pumping out more and more insulin in an attempt to lower the blood glucose level. This is overworking the pancreas and is likely to kill off the insulin-producing Beta cells.

I'm no doctor - go talk to your GP. It looks to me as if you're pre-diabetic if not full-blown Type 2. Don't worry too much - it's only the end of the world if you don't do anything about it! :D I think it was the best thing that ever happened to me - quite seriously!

After you've seen your GP come back and let us know what s/he said. There's always someone around to answer your questions and to give you all the help and support you may need. :D
