We are entitled to an annual foot assessment by a nurse but I don't think you are entitled to a podiatry appointment unless there is a specific foot issue that your GP would like to refer you for?
I paid out of pocket for mine, didn't realise we were entitled to an annual appointment just for check up purposes/preventative treatments?
I had an issue leading me to go to a walk-in clinic. The podiatrist I saw there told me, as a diabetic, if I had an issue, I could self refer on that basis. She did not do any work on my foot, just examined the toe with the bruised toenail, and sent me on my way.
My only foot check was undertaken by the practise nurse. You could give your local podiatry service a call.
Ok thanks for the advice, I've been put on Duloxetine for numbness and tingling in my toes and have suddenly got what I think is a bunion, however I have a consultant appointment next week so will speak to her about it.
Some GPs offer a self referral for podiatrists for diabetics. However this depends upon how your CCG is structured...
Our GP has forms on reception for physiotherapy and podiatry that you complete and send direct to the clinics.. They then work out whether you can see them and when. As well as that our GP rents a room basically to a podiatrist who charges.
Many CCGS have or are in the midst of reviewing footcare for patients... Would be worth googling your CCG/Diabetes/podiatry or footcare etc.
Diabetics should have annual foot checks as a minimum from your GP Practice or your hospital.
Again this depends upon so much. My feet aren't checked at my hospital- nor are my eyes screened because my hospital is out of my CCG so my GP arranges everything.
Its an absolute nightmare really as no CCG, hospital or GP practice runs the same even though they are all classed as the NHS.
