I have been on 1200 calories a day since beginning of June, personally have found it easy and only, once or twice gone off the rails. Weight lose so far 2 & a half stone, now at the upper end of "NORMAL" BMI, intend to go down to 12 stone and take a step back and see where to go from there.

BG levels generally in non diabetic range except for the off track days, only 2 in period since diagnosis, daughter wedding and once whilst on holiday.

But I am at the beginning of my personal journey so who knows what's around the corner.

Happy days all.

John - Can I suggest that as you close in on your target weight, you increase your calorie intake incrementally? I certainly found as I got there I was so accustomed to being in weight loss phase that I found it difficult to find the balance point for loss/maintenance. As a result, I got to a lighter than ideal weight, which I am just managing to maintain at the moment.

For me, the maintaining part was much harder than the losing phase.

Good luck. You certainly seem to have got the hang of it.

Edit: Got my losing and maintaining phases mixed up.

LIke Andy, I don't know and don't (much) care what my calorie intake is - more important to me is watching my carbs instead. What I do know though, is what I'm currently eating is too much for me to keep on losing weight, so I really need to be eating less. But I'm finding even with highish fat and being nicely in ketosis is that I'm still feeling hungry at times, so I'm in a bit of a quandry...

@AndBreathe
Thanks for your confirmation of my thoughts.

It would appear my ideal BMI is between 9st 7 and 12st 7 or thereabouts, shall initially stop the intended weight lose
@ 12stone and starts balancing from there.

So if I lose a little more whilst balancing won't be a big deal.

However my wife is already getting a little peed off that I seem to be able to do it easily, she is now joining me on my version of LCHF and indeed has been fully supporting me since diagnosis.

What would we do without a BETTER HALF.

1. Ketostix turn purple when you wee on them, and (more important)
2. You don't feel carb cravings any more

@JohnD54 - to check if you're in ketosis, you need some way to measure your ketones, and the cheapest but slightly messy way to do this is with Ketostix which are test strips that you use to measure ketones excreted in your urine - they are really just a roughish guide as to what they they were, not what they are currently. I originally used to do a nightime check. Available online and probably via your chemists.

A type 1 may have a meter that (also) uses ketone measuring strips which I believe are highly expensive, and they test their ketones via their blood.

An intermediate way is now possible via a "ketone breathalyser", the Ketonix, which gives you an up to the minute reading of the acetone in your breath. This is what several of us on the forum now use. I did a review of mine here - it's probably worthwhile buying one (a) if you're a serious gadget freak, and (b) if you are going to be seriously low carbing for any length of time.

Too true John.

My OH is the cook in our household, and a real foodie. His businesses included a restaurant (although he wasn't actively involved in the cooking side of it), so you can imagine how diabetes went down in our house!? Anyway, we agreed that whatever my diet demanded, he would pretty much join me on the eating plan, and he has. He never carried any weight, but is now also very, very trim.

When I have come back to UK without him a couple of times, I imagined he'd spend all his solo time eating carb-tastic treats, but he tells me that just hasn't happened. He probably has had a few more chips, perhaps, but not too often, allegedly.

I would have found this whole journey so much more difficult without my OH. I consider myself very lucky indeed.
