Poor Medication Management

Hi all, I am type 2 diabetic and was diagnosed approx Sept 2012.
I live with my partner and 2 young kids.
I've been taking medication on and off for the past 5 years but I have difficulty in taking my meds daily,,,, part for me forgets and then it rolls on then next I realise I've missed weeks of medication.
Surprised my Doctors not given up on me.
Also My diet is very poor,,,, eating all the wrong stuff and working shifts doesn't help.
Any tips on maintaining taking meds and to stop eating rubbish.
 
Hi,
Have you tried pill boxes, that will help you remember. It's important you eat the right foods, low carb will help your diabetes.
Snacks can be things like nuts and cheese.
Please take your diabetes seriously, complications can occur.

Hi, I do have pill boxes but its trying to make sure I've got them with me,, like at home, work bag, in the car.
My GP has put my on metformin 4 500mg and a needle pen of liraglutide which I hate
Also High BP and high cholesterol.
A of which I've not taken for at least 6 months.
I last a month then get distracted in remembering to take them.
My diet is bad,,, could do better
Partner doesn't help, she just says don't cut the rubbish out just have less but I'm like all or nothing.
Feeling helpless, I want to combat diabetes but I keep lapsing.
 
Oh Really sad to hear that you have poor control .. my partner is on same condition ..taking met for min 2 times (500×2 ) .but poor HbA1c bcz of bad eating habits .but now dr stopped his carbs ..he is only talking meat n vegetable nd cheese ..few fruits intake .and surprisingly his sugar is under control (under 10 mmol after meal) .he is all the time on laptop man .no active lifestyle but yes good eating and medication helps .I wish he do some exercise and can stand in non diabetc list ....
Please try to eat healthy take medication on time (we always have medicine in car /bag/ his pockets /office and in fact few friends houses where we go often) focus ur health if u love ur family n urself ...no body can force you to stay healthy but it's only You who can bring change .
 
I do not wish to scare you but are you fully aware of the risks you are taking by not taking your prescribed meds? Get a small pill box, just big enough to take one day's meds but small enough to fit into your pocket and carry it everywhere with you. Have another in the car, office etc. Get your bp/A1c checked regularly and try to improve your diet. Portion control means nowt if those portions are made up mostly of beige carbs.

I have tried to convert to brown foods.
I like most foods but difficult managing meal plans.
I tell my partner we need to meal plan but sometimes difficult as we work opposite shifts more nights than days.
As I work in an Airport in restricted to what I can take through and all we have is a microwave.
In trying to convince my partner to batch cook.
 
Brown carbs,white carbs are all carbs and will turn to sugar when you eat them. For a Type 2 they are best avoided.
Meats, cheese, butter, green veg, salad, bacon, eggs are all things that have a limited impact on blood sugar levels and can be eaten with relative impunity. Snacks like some nuts and pork scratchings are good if you really need to snack. You probably need to eat foods that keep you feeling fuller for longer rather than carbs that simply make you more hungry.

By brown foods I guess you mean wholemeal, changing to wholemeal will not make a difference to your blood glucose levels. May I ask what your last HbA1c result was, please?

Yes please cut carbs ..you can buy microwavable ready to eat veg portions and I honestly marinat chicken fillet for one week in advance if I am at work .if u likes spices add some to vege to make food yummy .you can have 1 carb portion in one of the meal u like but limited it to 100g carb per day .
 
If you want good control .eat portions . Breakfast boil eggs or omelet with pancakes and some healthy fruit .dinner plate and lunch plate made up of 3 portions . (Salad big portion +veg+ meat) drink pleanty of water before having meals .take medication after meal try to eat at fixed times..it's basically keto diet ..if you Google ut you can follow better ..no carb or low carb but full protein n fat .Health is wealth .job is not an excuse .nobody stops you from taking good care of your health ..
 
I know I need to get my backside in gear as I'm not helping myself.
My first step is going back to the GP for help and get my full bloods checked.
I'm going to start a diary and see how it goes.
 
Do you need to lose weight? I sympathize about shift work. It is really difficult to find any sort of pattern and being tired all the time just makes you want to eat loads of sweet stuff. But you really do need to find a balance.

Are you going to start your diary on here? Many people use the blogs here to keep track.
 
The incentive to reduce the carbs should be that you may well be able to stop the Liraglutide once your weight has come down together with your blood sugar. It's obviously not easy in your particular line of work but there should be ways to adjust the food balance?
 
Perhaps you need to sit down with your partner and have a serious chat about your health, the potential consequences of not looking after yourself, and how much worse life could be if you end up with other complications on top of the diabetes. Try to get her on board; telling you not to cut the rubbish but to eat less of it, isn't going to help. Work out what it is that causes you to stop doing what you should after about a month or so - and sort that out pronto. Both of you need to properly understand that diabetes cannot be taken lightly. If you're an all or nothing kind of guy, then you should be able to figure out why the plan falls apart, how to put it back together, and how to make it work - no excuses!

See if you can work out a plan of meals that you both can sign up to, and ensure that you include enough lower carb items, and full fat products (milk, butter, cheese, cream, yoghurt, etc. and not the low fat varieties) that will help reduce/maintain good blood sugar levels for you. It's healthy food anyway, so will benefit all the family; there's no need for you to have totally separate foods, just skip the chips, potatoes, pasta, rice, crisps, etc and have more salads & veg instead . Plan some of the meals yourself, maybe learn how to cook (or do more of it if you already do help with cooking). Then make sure that you form habits - of taking your meds, of carrying supplies with you at all times, of preparing meds and a meal to take to work with you, writing a shopping list & stick with it. There is no reason why all of those things cannot be managed within your separate shift patterns, but it will take a bit of work and effort to start with. Do whatever is needed; once it all becomes part of your routine, it's likely to stay fixed - like brushing your teeth or taking a shower. And you will have a wonderful sense of achievemnt once you get your life sorted and can see and feel the results of doing so!


p.s. Sorry if this sounds a bit schoolmarm-ish, that's not my intention, honest; just trying to offer some suggestions of how you might be able to tackle things; hope it helps a little. :)

I cant remember my last HbA1C, I'm over due a visit to the Doctors so I'm going to see her Tuesday.
I had a Hypo last night Sugar level was 25mmol, Kidneys doing overtime, After taking my morning meds and eating Scrambled egg and bacon my sugars have come down to 13mmol but my bladders still on overdrive, toilet every 5 mins .

I Used to be able to buy Pill Box which was also a key ring So remember your keys you have your pills Cant find them any more
but you are the main problem YOU have to be in control of your diet and your Medicine YOU must want to get control it is the only option. Not easy but achievable
