Hi all, I am afraid that I am very confused concerning the carb value of porridge - I have avoided it so far as I am trying to keep below 35 a day. However, would really like to eat something warm and satisfying in the morning! Look forward to any help and thank you.

Hi Nikkig

I'm new to the board I joined today.

I'm almost 50 and somehow became a Type 1 4 years ago....anyways on my DAFNE course they recommended porridge for my breakfast so for the past 4 years it's been porridge every morning....sometimes with nuts or berries.

It works for me but I think you should watch out for the milk. I always have the red top (skimmed) and my recommendation is to keep to the same milk and same portion of porridge.

Also as we are entering the summer season so watch out for the very hot mornings they can have an affect as well.

Good luck

David

I replace the oats with ground almonds - (+ coconut flour, & flax seeds) & use soya milk.

It's very satisfying & has vanishingly few carbs.

This experiment gives the info.

I personally wouldn't touch porridge with someone else's bargepole, as it would spike me horribly. I wouldn't care but I used to love it. The advice for all food stuff is try and test. Some can tolerate small amounts of things like porridge, some like me can't. It's always best to let you meter tell you what you can and can't tolerate.

it depends what you can tolerate really Nikkig. I personally have porridge every morning and I'm fine with it. Yes, I am on insulin nowdays... but I've had porridge for many years without fuss (I've done all the type 2 treatments pretty much).

But if you're low carbing and don't mind having higher fat in your diet... the almond mix is worth a try.

:D
