Is now going to be banned, or at least cut by 2/3 (portion isnt even that big).
Bs shot up by 8 over course of an hour, and that was with morning insulin

That cant be good. Am getting absolutley scunnered with the physical and mental highs and lows of all this. Sorry for moaning. Just a bad day. Cant even distract self with other pursuits as eyesight ****,

Aww Lilibet,

I can empathise with you. I've been having a bowl of yummy porridge for my breakfast for years but have recently given it up to go very low carb. I found that it just shot my sugars up way too high and if I tried to increase my insulin to cover the spike my bs would crash later on. I have to admit that I do miss it (eating porridge is part of my Scottish roots!).

So I'm now having eggs and bacon/smoked salmon/omlette and although it's not quite the same I'm getting used to it and really quite enjoying it now :D Plus, the bs are a LOT more stable and I don't feel have so sluggish 'cause of the highs (and lows and highs and lows again  )

Maybe you should try out something with fewer carbs for breakfast and see what happens? There are lots of lovely things you could have instead.

But keep your chin up chick - we all have rubbish days but you WILL gain control.

:) Katie. xxx

hi there

i thought that porridge was a great way to get the right carbs and also lower cholestrol but seems not

as i now have my new testing machine am experimenting this week, as my lovely husband is up for work at 5 am (yes there is one) for the next two days - and so am i - i can't be ***** to cook bacon and stuff so will have muesli and stuff tomorrow and porridge (water no milk) on thurs and see what it does, just need to see for myself if this is as bad as i think

will report the results later in the week

i think i will be keen for the bacon again by friday

it is hard work trying to work all of this stuff out, especially when the nurse says diet and have some activity without thinking about what we do in the rest of our lives

hang in there Lillibet x

When I was diagnosed, my DN advised porridge as a good breakfast. I dutifully ate porridge for a few weeks after that, until I got to grips with monitoring (which I was initially strongly discouraged not to do). I found that the problem with porridge is, for me, although my BG doesn't go too high it then comes down very slowly. That means that it is still raised before lunch - which, in turn, puts it up even higher. This leads to an overall rising BG during the day. I usually have bacon and eggs for breakfast now, although the peak BG is similar - it comes down much quicker (usually back to where I started within two hours).

Everyone is different, so porridge might suit some people - but do treat it with caution. If nothing else this illustrates the importance of testing to work out what works for you. It also illustrates the perils of following HCP advice blindly :(
