Portable gas fridge

Hi, am taking my 14yr old son Type 1 camping for a week in August in the UK. I am trying to find a portable fridge to keep his insulin cool, something that doesn't require the car engine running continuously, so preferably gas powered. However, all of the gas fridges are large unit suitable for fitting into a caravan or camper, way too large and expensive for my needs. I have come across the medi-fridge, which is a perfect size, but is electric only and uses up way too much current from the car battery to be practical for camping. I cannot rely on a hook up mains supply at the site either.

Any suggestions / advice are / is welcome!

Forget the Fridge.........use a Frio Insulin Cooler. Needs only water to activate and is used by many Diabetic's around the World.

Ken thanks for the link - perfect! Only I'm a little confused, why would you want to keep the pen cool? Unless I guess in very hot climates. He only needs to keep about 4 cartridges cool for the week, so presume the small wallet would suffice.

Insulin should be 'stored' before opening in a fridge. Once it is open and in use it is sufficient to be kept at 'room temperature', providing it is not too cold or too hot in accordance with the Patient Information Lefalet that is all you need to do.

Frio bags are amazing, have recently used my sons to keep his insulin cool whilst in use, travelling through Europe on our way to moving to Malta, as weather was very warm. Did use an in car fridge, for his 7 months supply. When campingat this time of year, i would advise the use of a frio bag, same as if your going to the beach, park ect.

I go camping with no access to fridge or even a cool box once the freezer blocks have defrosted...

You can either invest in a Filo pouch, very useful items I now have one of these, Before invested in this when I went camping I used to put insulin in an air tight container, stick in bowl of cold water and in the shade no problems, I always keep my milk in the same manner sat in a bowl of water in the shade...

If you really want to go down the fridge line, what you are looking for is a dual fridge for a caravan, these run of either on 12volt eletric (during towing via the tow bar stockets) and then when you set up you swap them to gas supply.. You find them at any camping/caravaning supply shop.. But be warned they are heavy items and bulky if only using a car to carry camping kit in..

But the two methods I've used I've not had a problem, and I've been camping when it's been as hot as it been lately..
