I'm a bit confused by " Portions". Can anyone tell me how big is a Portion

It varies a lot.

How much you weigh
How fit you are
How much carbohydrate there is in the food
What other foods you eat with it
How quickly it digests
How active you are before and after food

For example:
I can eat chips. Yay!!! I love chips
If I eat them on their own, I can only eat 5 without my blood glucose spiking high
If I eat them with chicken and 2 veg I can eat 10 before the spike ;)
If I eat them with a full mixed grill then I might be able to eat half the serving :cat:

The best (and only) way I know of to work out how your body works to a particular food is to get a blood glucose meter and test before and 2 hours after eating that food several times.

Sorry not to be able to give you a clear cut answer.

if you mean a portion as in a diet recommendation, eg 3 portions of vegetable 2 portions of meat, 4 portions of grain/carb
then a carb portion of carb is 15g and the size will vary to the amount of carb
a slice of bread is one portion of carb
an apple is one portion of carb
a bucket of leafy veg is 15g and 1 portion of carb

Thank you for your reply, I measured Sample of blood this morning , before eating anything and it was 9.7, Kind Regards

Eijack, 9.7 before eating is a bit high, I think. Are you on medication? Are you type 2?

Check out what is written in the forum on low carb eating. I have had huge success with lowing my blood sugar levels by cutting out bread, potatoes, rice and pasta (and obviously biscuits, chocolate, etc.).

Hi there,
The diabetic range to aim for is
Type 2 diabetes (NICE 2008)
  • Before meals: 4–7mmol/l
  • Two hours after meals: less than 8.5mmol/l.
I have copied this from www.diabetes.org.uk
Your nurse will refer you here and tell you to follow the NHS healthy plate.
Lots of people on this forum do something called low carb. If you look on this website (not the forum - here you will get opinions) they will give you all your options.
I follow LCHF and have brought my bs down to 5.2 - 6.8. Unless I have a cold then it's all over the place. I have also lost 2 stone in weight. To learn about LCHF go to www.dietdoctor.com. The guy who writes the blogg is a Swedish doctor who specialises in diabetes and obesity.

Eijack, I kept my reply short earlier (dinner was ready), but really would encourage you to cut out bread, potatoes, rice and pasta. Your diabetic nurse is likely to tell you that you should follow the 'Eat Well plate', but I have done that and my blood sugar stayed the same. As soon as I changed my eating habits, it dropped from an average of 6.2 to 5.2. Huge difference and I have found that I tend to snack a lot less now between meals than I used to.

I used to eat a lot of bread, but over the last 2 months only had two slices. I have had new potatoes again a couple of times and because I had given my pancreas a 'holiday' (of carbs and starchy foods) when I do eat something that I had cut out, my blood sugar no longer rises.

There are some who may claim that you can reverse diabetes (I'm only prediabetic), but I think the best we can hope for is to keep it in check and prevent any of the complications that may come if we don't control our blood sugars.

I encourage you to browse through the forum and read and learn. Those of us who ignored the advice of the diabetic nurse (and GP) and experimented with low carb diets have certainly improved our conditions.

Not necesarrily. When I checked myself at the end of January I was 12.4 18 hours after eating anything. (I used to eat one meal a day sometimes then snack in the evening ) Now between 5 and 6 and I am not on medication.

Well the problem Is that I can't afford to lose much more weight, I am 5.8, weigh 10.3, I feel fit and healthy, diet only type 2, If I give up much more I will have to run around when I take a shower to get wet! Do you think I would be better to take a tablet thus enabling me to maintain my weight?

Fat is you friend apparently. I was struggling to keep my weight steady without my BG going high. I increased my fat intake slightly and was able to maintain it. Now I can get on with losing the next 4 stone.
