Looking for people's experiences with gallstones.

A routine blood test showed I had elevated liver enzymes so ref for an ultrasound. At the time I was ref for the ultrasound I was fine.

But a week before the ultra sound I began to get mild discomfort on the right side just below the rib, along with horrendous nausea and bloating. Along with feeling like I have a cold or flu aches, muzzy head etc.

Ultrasound was inconclusive due to the amount of gas but did highlight a dilated bile duct, but no blockage seen. And an enlarged gallbladder with some stones and half full sludge.

Ref for MRI.

Dr said need clear image worried and asked for it to be made urgent. Did say could be tumor because no stone visible in duct on ultra sound. This has scared me but also said just as likely gallstones.

Since then the symptoms above have got worse but still no pain just rising discomfort on right belly and just bellow breast bone. I've lost about half a stone in two weeks. As I feel so ill.

Has anyone had a blocked bile duct with similar symptoms? I am so worried.

Hi @richard446 and welcome to the forums.

I really hope you feel better soon, and that the MRI clarifies you diagnosis.

Can I just check something on your profile? Did you mean to say that you are a diet controlled T1? I know gallstones can cause pancreatic issues so perhaps you have T3c???

Hi @richard446

I started with Gallstone issues back in 2013, I blamed the GLP-1 medications.

First US in 2014 said I had no stones but indicated a distended GB, also said to be inflamed, sadly no-one told me this back then! Bile duct was all ok.

2019 a further scan showed gallstones, bile duct ok. GLP-1s stopped as contraindicated, and can cause pancreatitis.

2023, January another US scan showed inflamed GB, stones and a 5.2mm stone stuck in the neck of the common bile duct, the pain was awful, but no sickness for me.

Fast forward 7 months, I’m in agony especially today, GP referred me for another US next week and also to an out of area hospital for GB removal, refused this at local hospital in January due to my BMI, more NHS excuses!

I suspect next weeks scan will show that the stone is bigger or there is another one there!

Despite pain, I’ve never experienced sickness etc. but no get bloated. The pain is in my right side but also my upper back on the right, a sharp stabbing pain which really hits when I move!

I’ve actually been debating going to A&E this evening it’s been so bad, but I’ve managed to dose myself up on some painkillers and I’m taking myself off to bed.

You should get a better idea with an MRI, they can do a MRI called an MRCP with contrast to show up the bilary tract better, might be what they are planning to do!

Good luck!

Please at least get medical advice through 111 if you don't want to go to A&E.
If the duct is completely closed you may need a drain for that.

The pain has lessened a little this morning, so fingers crossed. Am staying away from dairy now until the scheduled scan on Tuesday. I’ll take a guess that the stone that was in the CBD is still there perhaps along with a sibling now, and yet the NHS will still find some excuse to do nothing!

I’m still in pain which is getting worse, I can’t stand the thought of calling 111 or rocking up to A&E to sit there for hours.

Don’t have a temperature, not feeling sick or sick and not turned yellow with jaundice, so that’s a good sign!

I’m supposed to be going on holiday in 10 days… I’ve got a feeling I’m not going to get there!

Have an US scan booked on Tuesday morning via GP … I’m guessing it going to show pretty much what it did in January if not that it’s got worse!

I had 7 gallstones removed Via keyhole surgery, I had no pain or discomfort but 1 night at work I could feel something rubbing against my rib's on the right hand side, US scan confirmed stones, i was asked if I had any pain in my shoulder blade on that side as that can be a sign of stones, i hope that you can get sorted out soon, and you can get to get away on holiday.
