Post breakfast spike.

Hello there
This is my first post. Type 2 since 2001. Been chugging along quite well on my metformin but now levels have crept up, especially after breakfast. After a legal breakfast of porridge seeds and berries up to 16 after egg on whole meal up to 17. Don't feel so well. No post lunch spike. Anyone had this?
 
Hi Suercc,
I have experienced similar problems with breakfasts as I don't like fatty foods. I managed to get my BS down by cutting the portion size. As you test regularly you may see a bit of a drop if you try this. Good luck.
 
legal breakfast?..............lol......

it could be your meds need tweaked, or that the porridge isn't working for you.......

I would repeat the same brekky and test again.....

Just curious about the amount of porridge ( and bread) as I have a friend who said a similar thing and when I asked her to weigh the porridge to find out how much she was having it was 120g, spike explained and solved. 132g carbs= 80g oats, 20g sugar, 12g milk, 20g fruit. More than I would have in a day in 1 meal
 
Sounds like too many carbs to me. Have you tried any other breakfasts? Porridge and bread can give you a hefty spike in blood sugars.

Hi Suercc, I had the same problem when I started this a year ago, I just can't eat a bowl of cereal anymore and gave up on sandwich lunch.
For breakfast I have a weight wstchers frommage frais , blue berries or raspberries and a dessert spoon ful of a sugar free muesli ( that's enough to crunch). I tried eggs , bacon type breakfast but felt sick.
Breakfast is now my favourite part of the day.
For lunch I have a salad with corned beef or coronation chicken, I love coronation chicken and it gives the salad a naughty but nice appeal. Its trial and error and individual to you.

Hi, I've been getting the same spike after breakfast, I've been having 2 weetabix with semi-skimmed milk, it hs reduced to 10 today, wonder if it could be the milk?
 
It's unlikely to be the milk. More likely the Weetabix is the cause. Others have posted to say they have spikes with Weetabix.

Many people are more insulin resistant earlier in the day. You may find better control if you have a higher protein/fat breakfast with minimal carbs.
 
I found porridge to really spike my levels so now try and have fat free yogurt and mixed fruit for breakfast and really noticed a difference
 
I am type 1 and had the same, after trying to eliminate my regular porridge, then milk finally found it was the caffeine in my tea, since cutting out caffeine my levels have been much steadier. Not sure if this would work for everyone but definitely did for me.
