Hi I'm looking for some advice if possible. I am type 1 diabetic have been since I was 18 months old. My 2 year old son is showing signs of diabetes and has had a couple of high blood sugars.
I was wondering if my son was to be diagnosed so young what insulin they would put him on. Insulin pens and carb counting or the old cloudy and clear bottles which you draw up yourself? Obviously I was diagnosed a long time ago and first started on cloudy and clear but now on pens and just wondering how it would work with pre school ect any advice is appreciated. Thank you

The first step would be a doctor diagnosing this.

Hello @Riolongson

If you have any concerns over your sons health then make an appointment with your GP as soon as, personally as a type 1 I would not test my daughter but if she displayed any symptoms that concerned me then I would seek urgent medical assistance.

See a doctor, get clear answers.

At our local pre school the child's key worker handles testing/injections and parental contact.

Hi @Riolongson ,

Blimey! I remember drawing insulin up myself back in the day.. But was put on the MDI regime with pens (looking at your profile age.) a good 8 years before you were born..

It's alway great to meet someone who remembers propper jabs. :) It all tends to be "micro fine" 4mm "needlework" these days!

Regarding your young 'un? Take him to your GP.
A couple of random home tests with a meter will not always be conclusive & can add to needless worry..?

Best wishes.

Do not delay any further and get your child to a gp as soon as you can. The questions youve asked will be answered if diabetes is diagnosed.

I guess when he's showing symptoms I'd be a lot more concerned about his immediate safety than about what insulin he'd get if he gets diagnosed. Being a type1 I suppose you know about the dangers of DKA and how it's often already got to that upon diagnosis?
But in answer to your question, mixed insulin is usually not prescribed anymore, so it would most likely be basal/bolus or a pump.

Good luck, and please go to A+E with a toddler with diabetic symptoms. Diabetes can hit really fast.
