I've been on the prediabetes course the NHS offers (4 sessions in)
In 3 hours of being on here I've got better reworld actually implementable advice. The brown bread thing was from them, gave me a false sense of accomplishment.
I realise they're trying to not overwhelm people but a bit more honesty would certainly help
The NHS is a bit behind the times... Still pushing the eatwell plate. I've heard people on here going to meetings and being offered biscuits and such. *shrug*. The same thing here in the Netherlands... I joined the official forum, and all I found there was doom and gloom. Amputations, depression, sky-high blood sugars, members dying...
And them asking people to remember the foundation in their wills! And when I told folks I'd found low carb and that it worked for me, I was basically humiliated and practically booted. I cancelled my subscription to the Diabetes Foundation (NL) when they featured a carb-laden high tea on their cover. When you joined you got a medium-low carb cook book, but somehow they didn't seem to understand the impact of carbs on people, still.
I knew this was working because my meter told me so. It went against my specialist, two dieticians, two diabetes nurses... My meter told me I was okay. The experts weren't much help. My GP just told me she didn't know enough about T2 to be of much help, but she could monitor my bloods and such, and if my diet worked out, great, and if it didn't, she'd help me get help. So far, seven years in, i'm the only person in the practice to have gone from 20+ mmol/l to normal blood sugars, and am still without medication. I wish i'd found this place when i was still floundering, because the Dutch forum and their mindset, scared me out of my mind. Ah well, here now.
They're not trying not to overwhelm people. They just don't know any better. Alas.
