Pre-diabetic

Hello - I’ve just been diagnosed as being pre-diabetic and would welcome any advice from people in a similar situation please

Hi and welcome to the forums. When you say you're pre-diabetic, what was your HbA1c result? Nobody told me back in 2010 or so that my BG was out of normal range..... you've got the chance to do something about it.

It is often possible to do something fairly quickly about raised blood glucose. "Normal" blood glucose HbA1c is almost always somewhere in the range 35-41mmol/l, with most around 38 (graph attached, showing non-diabetic blood glucose results). So if BG rises above 41 it's usually a sign that something has started to go wrong and needs looking at.

Many of us here have found that blood glucose can be quickly brought down and kept down by reducing the amount of carbohydrate - starches and sugars - eaten. That affects consumption of rice, pasta, bread (and all flour based things like pasta or pastry), cereals, most fruit, anything sugary, potatoes, beer, etc. This is the sort of advice that people were given up to around 1985 or so, there's nothing new or untried about it.

Ask as many questions as you like.

I was pre diabetic 15 years ago, I've maintained normal bg levels every since.
I bought a blood sugar monitor and tested before and after everything I ate. This way I found out what put my blood sugar up high. For me losing weight and exercise made no difference, it was all about the diet.
I had a normal bmi to start with but I did lose weight without trying and I maintain a lower bmi now.
