I do not have diabetes
Was you testing then?
Could you have been unaware of having hypos?

I wasn't until I got my diagnosis, I was totally oblivious of problems with blood glucose issues!
When you are told you have high blood sugar and you do because of the hypers, you don't look at the other end of the range.

Maybe stretch your carbs out even more!

I started to test about a month before my first OGTT. I never tested at anything close to a hypo but could easily peak at 10's. That's when I started to check which carbs affected me and what quantity I could tolerate. You're right though, I only looked for the hypers, not hypos. I was wrongly diagnosed with type 2 initially as so many of us are, and as such was told I couldn't hypo unless I was taking medication. I therefore didn't watch for the lows. I certainly don't remember getting the shakes though, apart from once. Christmas 2014 when I was blissfully unaware of any problem, we had a late cooked breakfast. On waking I had a glass of cranberry juice and a couple of chocolates to keep me going. By the time breakfast was ready I was quite shaky! That was the only time though.

Feeling much better tonight now I've had a proper dinner with a few carbs! Having snuggles with my little one, supper and bed soon.

I think I would go mad some days without you guys! Thank you so much! This forum really is a god send

I get twitching too Kaz. Facial in my cheeks When I am really poorly and occasionally my eyes. I take magnesium
Glycinate now before bed and it helps with anxiety and also muscle twitching. Fingers crossed anyway. I am seeing the endo in two weeks so I am so hopeful it will be productive. Xx

Yes, I was only reading yesterday that facial twitches are a sign of magnesium deficiency...

How are you doing now @Kaz261 ?

I was away a few days last week, missed this thread til now.

Hi Brun, things have settled again now thank you. Although I'm now suffering with my balance problem/dizziness. If it's not one thing, it's another at the minute.

Have you ever been referred for food allergy/intolerance testing? As a result of me sending an email to my consultant recently asking if he could think of any other reasons for my symptoms or any medication that might help with control, he's recommended I see an allergy specialist!?? My RH gets very uncontrollable around "that time of the month" and my GP has recently prescribed the mini pill to see if it will help. Time will tell I guess! The consultant basically said he knew of no link between the female monthly cycle and difficulty with bs control. Surely, I can't be the only one?!! Although how things are going lately, I probably am!

Have you had your b12 and folate checked Kaz?? X
Hi Emma, how are things with you? I haven't had either of those checked. My GP seems reluctant to do any further tests unfortunately. I'll have to read up on those. Do they affect hormones?

Oh for goodness sake!

Hormones affect RH and diabetic control all the time.
There is a study somewhere showing that women with normal glucose tolerance often experience (mild) RH around their period.

Your consultant has some worrying gaps in his knowledge!

Hope the mini pill works. I don't have a great history with synthetic hormone supplementation (pill, progesterone), but the one thing that has worked in a FANTASTICALLY AWESOME and GLORIOUS way is the Mirena (IUD, releasing tiny amounts of progesterone). I would suggest anyone with heavy or awful priods check them out. Yes, this IS promoting the Mirena. Cos it changed my life, and i want to shout about it from the rooftops.

So watch out for hormone PMS stuff. If the mini pill works, it will be wonderful. If it doesn't, don't put up with any side effects. There may be other brands that work better for your body.

Has this helped with bs control around that time? Since having kids my periods have been ok, but over the last 3/4 months my RH gets very difficult to control from around 3 days before I'm due on. I'm hoping the pill helps. I've been taking it a couple of weeks now and don't seem to be experiencing any noticeable side effects yet.

The message from the Consultant came via my GP, so he may have misinterpreted what he actually said. The Specialist Diabetic Nurse said she had patients that had to either double or half their insulin around the time of their period as it could have a huge affect!

I'll look into the Mirena. I assume it's safe for someone of my age (40)?

Thanks for the advice x

I can't claim the Mirena has particularly helped with PMT/RH. But it has reduced the periods themselves from 3 weeks of arterial spurting. Down to 7 days of almost-not-there.

It's like being on holiday.

Haha . No wonder you recommend it whole heartedly! I was like that as a teenager, very painful too. Went on the pill at 16 and never looked back! Fingers crossed it has some positive effect on my bs control. Goodness knows, I could do with some good luck at the minute!

There are a few vit and miners deficiencies that could affect blood sugar control Kaz. It's expensive but if you can afford a full profile I would def do it. I am about to have a test for puroluria which is a deficiency of zinc and b6 (I think) as my hair is falling out in clumps. I'll let you know how I go. B12 and folate deficiency def causes issues with bs control and can cause a whole host of neurological symptoms like tremors pins and needles soreness in mouth, mouth ulcers, tinnitus. The list is endless xx

That's interesting Emma, thank you. Where do you get the tests done? Does the full profile include all of those things you've mentioned? It would be worth every penny if I can get to the bottom of things. So far I think the pill has helped a little with my bs but I've been permanently "on" for over 2 weeks now and have really bad cramps this morning!

It's a personal choice but I would never go down the route of synthetic hormones as I think it leads to trouble.
You can have a full test at Genova diagnostics you would need to contact them to see if you would need a referral. There is also something called a spectracell test my vitamin d group recommends but I don't know how well respected that is. I am planning to do it once I have saved enough pennies. The tests won't tell you if you have pyroluria but will test for zinc and b6 x
