Pregnant and struggling with BG

Hi. I'm 6 weeks pregnant and I'm struggling to keep my BG to the recommended levels - 7.8mmols 1 hour after eating. If I do manage it, I usually hypo shortly after.

My hba1c was 55 and I'm worried as it wasn't under 48.

Also I'm on antidepressants (which I really need) and am worried about the added risk.

Has anyone been in a similar situation?
Does everyone who is pregnant manage to keep their control so tight?

I've been T1 for 5 years - on libre and pump. I have 2 children who were born pre diagnosis.

Any help/support/advice appreciated!

Hope you are feeling okay? I've had 3 kids whilst type 1 diabetic and it was a bit scary to have high sugars given all the advice about having perfect sugars.
All I can say is that I had a few panicky days early on yet the babies all made it and were born healthy. So keep calm and speak to your specialist nurse. If you don't have fsl now is an obvious time to get one otherwise your fingers are gong to get sore.
The other obvious point is stressing will make the blood sugars worse so try not to over react or you're going to be bouncing around from hypo to hyper and that roller coaster is probably worse than being a little bit higher than perfect.

And remember that T1 diabetics have been getting pregnant for the last 100 years and there weren't any glucometers for the first 60. Speaking as the daughter of a T1 mother who managed her pregnancies without a glucometer. And I don't remember this amount of obsession with levels when I had my two T1 pregnancies. (Though I did discuss whether my control was good enough before both pregnancies, I actually pre-empted the permission with my second because I'd already decided that they were good enough.)

So yes, the statistics look slightly better if you keep your levels in the recommended range and have the required hba1c before pregnancy, but plenty of T1s have had successful pregnancies with initial hba1cs much higher than 55. (I think of it's really high, above 80 or so, they sometimes recommend that you don't proceed with the pregnancy.) Every pregnancy has a small risk of miscarriage, whether the mother is T1 or not, the risk goes up very slightly if you are T1 and is minimised by optimising your sugar levels.

But try not to stress about not being perfect, no one is (well maybe some people are, but I haven't met them). Just do the best you can.

Good luck and congratulations on the pregnancy.
