Pregnant with Twins! Any advice??

Hi everyone, I've found out a few weeks ago I'm pregnant! Earlier this week we've discovered it's twins! I've been a type 1 diabetic for 17 years and have background retinopathy and slight maculopathy for which I've had 1 laser treatment. Just wondered if any other type 1's could give me some advice or any of their experiences with twin pregnancy! Thanks!

I guess your team are already keeping an eye on you and will work with you on how to best look after you and the babies.
 
Congratulations! My nos 2 and 3 are twins. Feel free to pm me any questions. Mine are dcda and my pregnancy was not treated as much more high risk than a normal type 1 one. The cut off/out date was a week earlier but they were premature anyway. I wouldn't recommend moving house too close to the end! Pm me where you are in the country as i'm decluttering atm and would love to give some baby twin stuff away.

Hi, I am guessing you are heavily pregnant now? Good luck with everything when the labour comes :-) I have one 14 month old and am now nearly 12 weeks pregnant with twins. Also have T1D. I have had background retinopathy since I was 18 (15 years ago), but literally have just had results back from my first trimester eye check and now have maculopathy too. Am a bit anxious as am so early pregnant and it's clearly already taking a toll on my body. Nothing got worse during my last pregnancy. I have tight control but do go hypo a lot. Anyway, did you have any tips you wish you knew when you wrote this post? I hope all went well with your pregnancies and wish you much happiness with your babies when they arrive.

Hiya! Yes very very pregnant now, 35+3 and the size of a small whale! I did hypo a lot yes, and still do occasionally, so much so I had to split my basal dose and do twice a day. I must’ve drunk over 100 small juice cartons this whole pregnancy for hypos

One thing I would say is I wish I knew not to stress over the odd high reading. I’ve had a reading of 15 or 17 once or twice and felt so guilty and it stressed me out, but it’s ok if this happens, just correct and carry on, it’ll be ok!

And honestly take it easy, I ended up on bedrest for a short cervix, so nothing diabetes related but do look after yourself and get someone to run around for you like I make my other half do now

I’m being induced on 14th April so not long to go now! I wish you all the luck and hope I can be of and help if you have a question! Xx
 
Thanks for your quick reply! Eek, I am dreading the stage when I'm a beached whale :nailbiting: I have freaked out a lot at highs too so thanks for the reassurance it works out ok, and well done for managing your diabetes so well that you're only on bed rest due to nature. I already am taking liberties on the help front with my hubby too haha! Take care xx ps hopefully your other half is not squeamish. I wasn't even sure my hubby was going to last the last single labour so not sure he'll stay conscious with one after the other ;)!

That’s ok! It’s nice to talk to other people in my situation, I can’t imagine it’s very common.

That’s another thing is when I have my antenatal appointments at the hospital, I go to the diabetes clinic rather than the twin clinic obviously as diabetes is more important, but consequently I missed out on the twin clinic until I happened to have an appointment at 29 weeks on the day of the twin clinic and it was so nice for the midwife to talk just twin stuff to me instead of diabetes and numbers. So if possible ask to maybe have a twin appointment.

I was told someone would get a slap on the wrist for not mentioning me to the twin clinic!

He’s not too squeamish, he wants to look at their heads as they’re born and cut cords too! Xxx

That's a good idea, as I have already asked a couple of things twin related but as you say, you really need someone with the specialism. Great news about your partner... I told mine to leave the room as it looked like he was going to have a heart attack or something, but fortunately he stayed to the end and didn't faint so he didn't miss out in the end :-) Have you had any other children? I don't think I'm allowed to make recommendations on here, but I had no mental preparation for my first labour as in my mind I thought I was hardcore and have a high pain threshold etc, but I personally would do the epidural with the next one, without any guilt or second thought, especially as it's twins and induction. Oh and expect the unexpected with inductions, they tell you it can take days to start but I was 4cm dilated within an hour or so of the drugs being put in!! I also have great experience of breastfeeding my daughter (reduces her risks of type 1 diabetes apparently among other things) so if you need any tips about that when they arrive let me know. The thought of breastfeeding twins is a bit daunting though, so understand if you're not considering it as an option xxx
