Hi ladies,

So I'm getting ready to try for another baby. I'm on higher dose folic acid, a1c is 5.4 in old units (think its 35 in new measure) Unfortunately since my last pregnancy I've received the 'early changes' letter regarding my retinal screening. Still gutted about this but I've posted about that before so won't go into it again! Just wondered what anyone's experience has been of pregnancy with mild background changes? I am scared this time round as for some reason everything seems to have decided to go wrong recently and although I did worry about my eyes etc the first time round, I was in a fortunate position that I hadn't any changes picked up at that point and so wasn't overly concerned.

Thanks in advance :)

Hi @Kateyo :)

Have you spoken to,your consultant about this? Just to,see what they say :)

I had 'background changes' once but then they went away and so I didn't have them when I got pregnant last time. From speaking to the lovely lady who did my pregnancy eye screens, it seems there can be a random element to eye changes in pregnancy anyway. That is, some ladies will get them even though their control is better than other ladies'.

If it was me, I'd speak to,as many medical staff as possible to get their opinions, then plan for pregnancy if all seemed ok :)

Hi @azure :)

Yes I've spoken to just about everyone I could when I received the letter. My consultant and DSN both thought it strange as my control was tight and nothing had been picked up during pregnancy nor 6 weeks after when opthamology signed me off following the pregnancy but the changes have remained which makes me sad as I had kind of hoped maybe it was to do with my prolonged labour and things would resolve :( they are happy for me to go ahead though and I seen a specialist who has a particular interest in retinopathy and he had no concerns. I hope all goes ok but I am nervous now but I can only keep control as best I can and the rest is out of my hands! Thanks for your reply :)

Try not to worry @Kateyo (easier said than done, I know!)

You've done absolutely the right thing getting advice so be reassured :)

Concentrate on getting great control, eating well and relaxing. You have a fantastic HbA1C

Pregnancy is an unknown for any woman, diabetic or not, but it's also the most wonderful time, so don't let worries ruin that. Keep your blood pressure good, your control good, and get all your checks and you may well find that your eyes don't alter at all during pregnancy. X

Ah thanks @azure :) I've just found it very hard to accept but I know you're right that I have to enjoy it esp as it could be my last pregnancy given the eye situation :( for all the worry a diabetic pregnancy brings, it's so worth it at the end :dummy::dummy1: I'm going to try and put the worry to one side and just enjoy it if and when it happens. I'm waiting for my dexcom to come so that should make things easier too. I didn't use anything like that last time so would be interesting to see how it helps :)
