Prescription exemption certificate

Mines expired for a few weeks now, but I am still eligible for free prescriptions due to low income, which does require a bit more paperwork, but i've not been bothered by the chemist, I tick the certificate option though still.

I would suggest you tick the right box, just to protect yourself from any potential fines - the box for the certificate says "I have a valid medical exemption certificate" and then you sign the bit at the bottom. You know you don't currently have a valid medical exemption certificate, so even though you are entitled to free prescriptions for other reasons, signing something you know to be incorrect is technically fraud and could result in a fine. Save yourself the bother and just tick the right box, get a new card applied for and then save yourself the extra paperwork :)

Nb) I don't think you are doing anything wrong, but bearing in mind that they have issued fines to those using expired certificates even when they have incurable chronic conditions it seems to be very much a "computer says no" system, they will issue the fine without applying any logic or fairness to the situation & then you will have to try and sort it out. Sounds like too much of a pain in the bum to me :)
