I've not been posting much lately as last month I was really unwell with tonsillitis and have only recently got over it. At it's worst I was on an icecream, ice cube or McDonalds milkshake diet depending on how bad the pain was, and who was available to fetch my supplies! (I never have milkshakes, ever - unless for rare medicinal purposes like this).

So now I'm over all that I have had a fasting cholesterol test and an hba1c test - which is about 3 months exactly from the last one which was when I found out I am prediabetic.

I have only had the results from phoning up but will get the print out on Monday.

hba1c = now 41 (it was 45 three months ago)

cholesterol - HDL is 1.6 - LDL is 2.4 and Trig is 1.3 (I did not have a fasting one three months ago so do not have the numbers for then).

I'm pleased about the reduction in the hba1c - what does this mean for me now and should I aim to go lower?

What do the cholesterol results mean? Are they good? The GP has marked them as normal on my record so presumably they are good?

Well done. Going in the right direction, and officially just outside the pre-diabetic range (42 and above). Keep up the good work and you should get this down to the 30s with a bit of luck.

HDL should be above 1.2
LDL should be below 3
Trigs should be below 1.9 (fasting) or below 2.3 (non-fasting) although "experts" say below 1 is best.

Well done again - they are normal and within range.

"It is now believed that the triglycerides/HDL ratio is one of the most potent predictors of heart disease."

Since this is a US site the 'ideal' ratio of 2 translates to a UK figure of 0.87.
Your trigs/HDL ratio is 0.81 so well done. It's all looking good

Thanks for the replies. I feel good about the results now but don't intend to take my eye off the ball. I've learnt so much here and with regular testing have identified which foods to avoid.
Having a sweet tooth was my main downfall and I did really cut it back. It's been really interesting learning which foods spike up my blood sugar and I assume that will always be the case so I intend to be vigilant.
