Protein bars?

peggleg

Newbie
Morning all,

New to the forum and not really one to post questions on forums, but being recently diagnosed with Type 2 I feel its time to ask others advise

Does anyone have any advise on having protein bars as a snack? I have tried Grenade bars and it does not seem to affect my sugars, but just wondering if its likely to cause other issues down the road?

Hi @peggleg
Welcome to the wonderful world of forums, stick with us, you will soon understand your T2 better than most Dr's seem to.
If you enjoy them and they don't raise your levels then why not. There are lots of theories and opinions about sweeteners, guess you just have to decide what's right for you.
When I was diagnosed I was addicted to sugar, a really sweet tooth. I just thought that life would be easier if I could get rid of my craving for sweet stuff, so I just cut out anything sweet.
It was surprisingly easy compared to giving up smoking, amazing how your tastes can change in just a short while.
Have a look at the link below my post for "Jo's Nutritional thingy" it's very informative for someone newly diagnosed.

I have eaten them very occasionally but as a emergency replacement meal not a snack when out and about if I can’t get anything else and I feel really hungry (usually the result of bad planning on my part) and I usually only have half of one to feel satisfied. They do not seem to raise my blood sugar too badly

Thanks for the tag @Antje77 , yes I eat these type of bars regularly, luckily they don’t affect my blood sugars either. Some people like to avoid artificial sweeteners and rid themselves of their sweet tooth, which is fine if they want to tackle their blood sugars that way. I have a very sweet tooth and am happy that I’ve found something sweet and tasty in the form of these protein bars to keep my sweet tooth happy

Hi Peggleg,
The best course is not to snack at all.... And I can say that with my halo half falling off my head because I do absolutely adore a dark chocolate bar made with lavendar oil. (My favourite chocolatier imports it from Hungary). Just go with what works for you. Artificial sugars might mess with your gut bacteria, but if those start dying off you'll notice soon enough. You'd get the runs something awful, or get constipated beyond imagining. If nothing of the sort happens, and your blood sugars don't respond badly, as you've already checked... Have at it. It's still better not to, but if it sparks joy, to quote Marie Kondo entirely out of context... Your choice entirely.
Good luck, en bon appetit,
Jo

Thank you all for your responses. Being newly diagnosed an knowing there are support like yourselves available makes the journey feel much earlier to get through

Like @Rachox I too have a very sweet tooth. I will keep these as a standby and not a all the time snack as I would like to avoid snaking where possible. I do sometimes find that I get quite hungry in the late afternoon when travelling home from London so there is a rather big gap between lunch and dinner. I also keep a bag of nuts in the backpack

I wonder if a fresh look at what food really is & how we use it would be useful.?

I think I fell into your 'energy hunger gap' when I was first diagnosed

A few years down the road and I see food in a different light.

Previously it was a love affair, an anytime, anywhere feast .

Now, while I still enjoy my food, it's tempered with it being more like fuel.
Each meal a pit stop designed to get me as far as possible before the next one.

It took a while, but that premise had me eating more fats, as they satiated me for longer
& Less sugary empty carbs as that was shorter lasting .

I now eat my fill at meal times .

Less hunger, less snacking

The whole idea of LCHF, but it took me a while to see it

Finding that blueberries & a little Greek yoghurt could sustain me to teatime better then my previous sandwiches & croissant did, was a revelation for me.

I used to be amazed seeing the explorer type shows, where they meet some lost tribe, whose hunters manage on a few berries & nuts when the hunting is poor , as in "how on earth do they cope eating so little "

But since my explore of LCHF, I 'get it' now.

Btw, welcome to the club .
Best forum around imho.
