Protein powder shakes and blood sugar rises

Hi there,

I've recently been having some of the Phd smart protein plant shakes - they are the lowest carb/sugar ones I can find, and from the nutritional values you think they would have close to zero impact on blood sugars. Strangely though, I've found that consistently they produce the same effect as having a carby meal. My blood sugar rises after and is really resistant to insulin, in the same way as if I'd had a long acting carb as opposed to a more short acting hit. I end up giving what feels like 100s of microdoses to no effect for a few hours after as it just keeps creeping back up.

Has anyone else experienced this? My only thought is that the high amount of protein (20g) is being converted to energy and causing the rise - but I would have thought this was a slower process. Sweetner used is sucralose so shouldn't have an effect like maltitol which is the devil for blood sugars!

Here are the nutritionals:

96kcal
Fat 0.9g
Of which saturates 0.09g
Carbohydrate 1.8g
Of which sugars 0g
Fibre 1.1g
Protein 20g
Salt 0.43g

Ingredients:
Pea Protein, Soya Protein, Natural Flavour, Lactospore™ (Bacillus Coagulans), Iron Oxide, Zinc Oxide, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12, Sodium Chloride, Stabiliser (Xanthan Gum), Sweetener (Sucralose).

Any thoughts?

I use the Protein Works protein powder with unsweetened almond milk after workouts & if anything it reduces my blood sugar, usually have it with a few Brazil nuts & a superfood bite
What are you mixing it with? & when are you drinking it?
I’m not insulin resistant though, sure other people will be more helpful

Ah ok - I drink just with water. Usually morning but have tried afternoon also and effect is worse then as my basal is not as effective later in day.
I’m normally extremely insulin sensitive (take 0.5 units to correct) so it’s unusual! (Type 1).
Maybe the exercise is what makes you drop a little?
