Hi! my names Tori and I am a competitive swimmer. I am hoping to get a pump soon and I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas of the best pump to use out of the Animas Vibe and the Accu-Chek Insight( these are my favourite:))

Does anyone have any tips from experience about what you do when you swim. I usually train for 2 hours a day in the evenings and it is intense training.

Just want to get an idea of what it's like:D

Hi, Diabetic_Swimmer, I swim about an hour most days but unfortunately am on MDI so can't help with what to do with the pump :( !!!

Hopefully someone with experience will be along to help you. Have you looked at the run sweet website I think there may be a bit of info on there about swimming with a pump?

Good luck with it and keep swimming :)

Hi, when I swim I just simply detach my pump from my body. I swim for one hour and I definitely don't need insulin while swimming. Actually I start reducing my basal at least two hours in advance.

I have worn the Animas Vibe submerged for 2 hour periods with no pump problems whatsoever. If you are doing intense swimming you might be want to use something like a Spibelt to secure it firmly.

I'd take the pump off - pretty sure if your swimming competitively you wont want the pump case dragging in the water. Move over to injections for the two hours. I take a pen then have a small jab as needed, maybe take a few mins after first hour to do a BG test and see if you need any insulin.

If your levels are good before you start I'd guess you probably wont need any insulin when training hard.

I'm not a swimmer but my school friend is one of the team that swam the channel using an Animas Vibe. Personally I would stick with the vibe as it's known to perform well with water sports. The Insight is very new and any issues may not have come to light yet. I guess it depends on how confident you are being the guinea pig with a new pump.

Have you looked at the RunSweet website for guidance? Her consultant started the website as he is very into diabetes and sport so lots of useful info on how to manage things on there. http://www.runsweet.com/
