Pump assessment

Big surprise today when my pump assessment date arrived in the post. Was NOT expecting it after my last appointment. I'm so excited to be given a chance after my last clinic appointment where the registrar said no

Few weeks of writing things down and preparing my case ahead!

The internal Addenbrookes panel should have been last week, dropped one of the DSNs an e-mail over the weekend, hopefully she'll come back with good news.

I'll keep fingers crossed for both of us.

In just glad of a chance to be assessed, if they say no then so be it! At least I've gotten this far

Good luck with the assessment.

I'm in a similar position to you in that the assessment kind of came out of the blue. I had to go through alot of stuff with the dietician, do a detailed food diary and show I could carb count. My application is now going before the assessment board in March.

I'm sure from your previous posts that you said your in Scotland? I was told by my clinic that the Scottish Government are very keen to move people on to pump therapy who would like it due to Scotland having a lower percentage of type 1 diabetics using them.

Yes I've heard that too. My DAFNE nurse said Aberdeen (where I am) has had a big funding push right now so now was the time to ask for a pump.

I might start the detailed food diary now then and use that to show I CAN and do carb count properly. Anything that will help my case. I "technically" don't meet NICE guidelines, so I don't really know if ill get it.

I'm down in Tayside and I was told the only issue they've had with the extra funding is that they already met the numbers needed so didn't get any more.

Like yourself I also don't technically meet the NICE guidelines. The main things I put on my form was that I am doing between 6-8 injections a day, I like to spread my food intake out and split my Lantus. I also have a two year old so I go Hypo quite often from unexpected excercise so the temporary Basal settings appeal to me. Quite often when I take insulin at a meal time we have no idea what exercise if any or how active I might be.

I've got minute insulin needs. I use a half unit pen but even then I can't correct sometimes because half unit drops me a lot. It's a catch 22!

I've taken up running and I've had more hypos in the last 6 weeks than I did in the 6 months previous put together! Basal needs are minimal so I often don't take basal in order to stop the hypos. So it's the tbr's that appeal to me too :)

I've only gotten though on the other NICE criteria of sudden unexpected hypos, impact on lifestyle, compromised ability to exercise etc. My control and HbA1c would not meet the criteria.

I think the key is having a supportinve DSN and consultant who are looking at the big picture and will then help you work out how to apply the NICE guidelines to your advantage, after all their game is the same as yours, avoidance of long term complications.
 
Heard back from the DSN - no definite news this month as the meeting was postponed to March. But I have a consultant and registrar supporting it.

Today's antics - pre-run 6.8
5km - 4.6 - had a 10g snack
8.5km - 3.6 - ate some more, quickly
45 mins later - 8.0
 
Pre lunch 7.7
1 hour later 3.5
3 hours (driving) 12.2

Same meal I have regularly!

I fit in the insulin sensitivity stakes and baby stakes. Registrar doesn't approve, but consultant suggested it to me in the past and hes the one who holds the pump assessment!
