Pump Clinic Review

So today was time for a review at Pump Clinic. I have been using a pump for 7 years but control has always remained pretty mediocre, but around September I realised I needed to do something drastic so switched to a Low carb diet (around 60g/day) and along with using libre to help with timing doses and making smaller adjustments (trying to follow sugar surfing principles!) and also making a real effort to exercise more I have seen a huge improvement in my numbers, so was not as scared as normal when I went today!

My clinic uses diasend but as I only recently got it working on a new computer I didn't have the code to allow them access to what I had already downloaded, but they download pump and meter anyway. I also gave the HCA my libre to download but she just brought it back as 'we only need the one that goes with the pump' so that wasn't all that helpful since I barely use my meter and no longer use the bolus calculator on it!

Got into the appointment and they were thrilled with my A1c as I finally hit the target 6.5%/48! asked about what I was doing and I spoke about libre and timings etc, and then mentioned low carb. They couldn't really argue much as the results were there but then we spoke about my weight which is more than we would all like, and I said I was struggling as even though I am logging all food etc and am exercising more and taking in far less calories than goes out (at least a 500 calorie deficit per day) I am not really losing anything. The dietician then decided that I need more carbs, and was talking about brain needing carbs and that if I get pregnant I will definitely need a lot more. She wasn't too pushy about it as I think she could sense I was happy with the results I was getting with my blood sugars but is going to send me an appointment to see her which I'm sure will be thrilling but since I actually do want to loose weight it may be worth seeing if she can offer anything useful!

I asked about my TSH has I have had high TPO antibodies and TSH has been hovering around 5, I was actually hoping it may have gone up as I have been feeling freezing, obviously not losing weight etc and was hoping that may have been somewhat of an answer and something that could be helped but it is still at 5 so will have to continue to wait and see.

Anyway, overall it wasn't too bad, it was nice to get recognition for the hard work, I will get appointment with dietician and will be getting cholesterol and things checked in the new year so hoping I can maintain what I have been doing, which actually for the first time I really feel like the changes I have made are sustainable!

Well done on the HbA1c front @jodysd6, I would just go along to the appointment and see if the dietitian can give you any pointers on losing weight. Good luck.

Well done and it is food for thought on a low carb diet

Well done, it's nice to feel good about an appointment that puts you under such close scrutiny. Don't worry too much about their comments re low carb, my consultant fully endorses it, I think the NHS have been carb trained but some within realise it is better for us to follow it as it gives us much better results so I take comments like yours with a pinch of salt and carry on doing what you are doing, which is looking after no. 1

Very pleased all your hard work has paid off @jodysd6 well done on your A1c.

I intend to go to the appointment with the dietician with an open mind as I do need to loose weight so if she can offer anything useful it would be worth it!

It was nice that the hard work was recognised actually, I do have the odd gripe with my team but overall I like them (and anyway there is no one else at my hospital anyway!)

@jodysd6 be careful you aren't having too much fat as this will prevent weight loss too. I started lower carbing to see the benefit on my BG spikes after eating but I also lost weight quite rapidly which I wasn't expecting. I noticed I wasn't having much fat and have had to add extra butter in etc as being slim causes me cannula problems. Good luck with the dietician!
