Hi,
We have a hospital appointment tomorrow and we are giving the doctor a letter to give our reason for my son age 15 wanting a diabetic pump. I know to put down about giving overall better diabetes management and lowering HB1Ac level but not sure what else I need to put to ensure he will be able to get this. Has anyone else had to do the same?

Thanks in advance for you help.
Michelle

I would suggest you explain what part of his control he struggles with today. Does he have lots of hypos? Does it struggle at certain times of the day? Does he get hypos when exercising? Or do diabetes put him off exercise?

The reason I ask all these questions is why the pump provides better control: it allows you/him to adjust the basal at different times of the day rather than the basal injection which assumes his needs are the same 24 hours a day.
Bear in mind, the pump is not easy and requires investment from you and your son in terms of much more accurate carb counting.

I have been on the pump for just over a year and, as I exercise a lot it has helped massively.

Agree with @helensaramay - you need to explain exactly what his struggles are, so they can clearly see what his issues are and will understand what benefit using a pump would offer. They like to see that type 1's are already motivated to managing their condition so by getting access to a pump they will also work hard to make the pump a success.

I am on a pump and went through my DSN for this but also had to be very clear how it was going to help me, my reasons were very different from your sons, I also got rejected at the first hearing so had to persevere and keep pushing my team for this, if you're clear about your reasons and know this will help then push your team hard, good luck :)

I am going through this at the moment, on getting a omnipod but what is the tick box list to get one, my dn hasn't got any answers or don't want to say

@michellehalliday @Crystalwand - Please take a look at the following site http://www.inputdiabetes.org.uk/alt-insulin-pumps/is-it-provided-by-the-nhs/ .

What you need to do is provide evidence that either the automatic qualifying criteria from NICE are being met or that you meet some of the ABCD qualifying criteria that are all mentioned on that page. For example, having to do multiple (more than the anticipated 5 jabs per day, or large DP) and in the case of some of these things, evidence can help, such as in Dawn Phenomenon and Hypo issues.
