Hoping someone can help, I have had issues since yesterday with bloods rocketing I have changed my set twice and once the plastic cannula was all bent. I have changed again and my bloods are still creeping up. I have had ketone's but managed to get rid of them. I have had to inject some insulin as the pump doesn't seem to be doing the job quick enough. Has this happened to anyone before??

Thanks (hate my bloods creeping up even though I have had little to no carbs today)

Ring your pump DSN up or contact the pump manufacturers care-line Jillyp.

Its common for most diabetics to experience high or low bg levels when they first start pumping due to faulty cannulas etc, but the main culprits are usually the basal no longer correct as the levemir/lantus wears off or that the carb ratio is not correct.

Have a look at the pump manual and find out how to adjust the basals and then if you are not sure what to do, phone yr dsn for guidance.

There are loads of msgs on the forum about adjusting basals becauyse bg is high or low

Have you done your Basal testing regime?
Just checking

If you think cannula problem.. Etc but you have seen a high and done an initial correction by pump. Then theres a couple things to bear in mind...

1) if you get a one off high.. Always check gadget first.

2) correct after you have checked gadget and if necessary changed cannula.

3) your bloods because of lack of insulin etc despite a correction-if due to cannula can continue to rise for up to 3 hours before you see them drop.

4) if your levels have gone above 14.0-you may find that anormal dosage of insulin correction won't work normally anyway. I certainly have to do the cannula change and double my correction after changeover if my levels are above 14.0.

If you have changed yr set 3 times and bg is not coming down with corrections, then the sensible approach would be to deliver insulin by pen and get bg down sithout risk of krytones developing. My hospital recommends the pen when bg goes 14mmol and above and not worry about IOB, just keep checking bg every hr and use the bg readout to determine if bg will lower too much.

The cause of the high bg is more likely to be basal no longer correct so once adjusted, bg should lower ok again. Just try to keep to inserting the sets around the same area. Sets in the tummy will need slightly less insulin than one inserted in the backside as an example.

There is a lot of trial and error for some people who start pumping so keep at it and it will be ok...
