Query one.
Foods, it looks as if the wholemeal sliced bread I use is causing raised blood sugars. Bearing in mind I weigh around 45kg at present after an illness. 49kg usually- can fellow tablet/insulin users suggest replacements for this type of bread ......................................... PS i tried a Ryvita crispbread this a.m which helped is that a clue 6.8 0n waking only rose to 8.6 at 10a.m, usually 13.5

Hi @Bobby105
Please can you clarify what medication you are on, as in tablets, are you also on insulin? The more info you can share with members the more appropriate your answers will be, also the advice for someone who’s on insulin can vary enormously from those who are just on Metformin for example - thanks :)

Hi my apologies I take 500 g Metformin breakfast and eve meal. And 1 levemir pen dose (at present) 22 units on waking (after first finger prick). Apart from insunlin adjustments this has been the regime for approx 2 years. Weight when i was diagnosed with diabetes I weighed around 9stone 3 (weight had dropped from 10stone over the previous 9m without trying) Weight continued to drop to 6 stone 13. This is when i sought help from a dietician.

No apologies needed @Bobby105, it was just to help you get appropriate advice, it may help if you alter your profile that shows on the left side, if you change it to insulin instead of other then you won’t need to keep repeating yourself :)

Just click on your name in the top right hand corner then click on account details and you’ll see all the places you have your info, if you click treatment you’ll get a drop down box where you can change it to insulin

If you need any help just give me a tag in this thread

From your other thread I take it you are mainly seeing higher blood glucose in the morning, after breakfast. I already mentioned foot on the floor effect (liver dumping glucose to get you going for the day) and the carb content of your breakfast, but this poses a third factor.
Levemir has an action profile that usually doesn't really last for the full 24 hours, so you're combining a dwindling effect of your Levemir with FOTF and breakfast.
Usually with Levemir it is advised to split the dose morning and night, you might want to discuss this with your HCP.

What do you typically eat in a day? Have you ever counted your calories to check if you're anywhere in a reasonable range?
From your other thread I take it you are limiting carbs, but you're also using low fat yoghurt and skimmed milk. Perfectly fine if you get your calories from something else, but are you?

There are only 3 main nutrients when it comes to calories: Carbs, fats, and protein.
If you lower one group, you'll have to raise one or two of the others, otherwise you're on a starvation diet.

Thanks for this post . I am beginning to list my foods ,and the readings 5-7 times a day. Ive increased the protein and fat intake. I would like to speak to a member of staff about the readings and the levenir. Im afraid in th beginning when it was thought I was LADA I got no advice at all. If the nurse hadnt wanted me to change my diet she should have said so. But she said nothing. Then it was decided I was type 2, but things didnt improve much. Eventually I consulted a dietician and it was she who suggested insulin to my GP. Nothing has ever been said about splitting the dose. How could it be split and when 22 units are used at 6.30a.m at present Recently i was asked to lower my HbA1 result but no guidance on how. I managed to do this to 51 which is ok for me .
I did wonder if it would be a better choice split the dose. I will bite the bullet and ask to speak to someone qualified to tackle my case. Or get back to the private dietician with the food , glucose and carb, protein and fats results.
Thanks for your interest I feel someone understands and Im putting on weight. Even if the glucose readings arent right yet I feel more confident in understanding

@Bobby105 - I'm not going to address your query on insulin as I don't use it myself. In terms of advice on how to adjust your dose; whether by splitting it or adjusting in some other way, you really need to speak to a medical professional with the appropriate expertise.

This site is manned by volunteers who themselves tend to be living with a diagnosis of diabetes in one form of another, not medical professional. We can share personal experiences which might be useful to you but not give medical advice.

In terms of your weight; I'm a slight person too and dropped to a similar weight at the end of last year after a bout of illness and the loss of a close relative. It has taken me until now to regain my losses to be back at my "fighting weight" around 48.5kg.

In order to gain weight I firstly increased my portion sizes, then a bit more protein, then a bit more fat. For me, adding fat is more a case of choosing fattier cuts of meat than mainlining on cheese or double cream.

It takes a while to gain weight from a low base, caused by being unwell, as out bodies are usually still in a healing phase for a while - even when we feel a bit better.

In terms of substitutions for bread? I don't eat bread and haven't for over 10 years. I gave it up when I adopted a lower carb lifestyle and just didn't miss it. In the meantime I have also had to go gluten-free.
