Question about blood sugar

Hi.. I'm Emma and aged 30. I am a newbie. I was diagnosed as diabetic 6 days ago.

My doctor called me in as she had my blood test results and wanted to test a urine sample. I ended up being sent to hospital for 2 nights as I had high blood sugar and high ketones. In hospital I saw a diabetic nurse and she said to test my blood at home twice a day... Before breakfast and before my evening meal and also test my ketones once daily. My ketones have been fine.

The doctor that I saw in hospital said he wasn't sure if I am type 1 or 2 but he suspects I'm type 2.

I have taken readings for 4 days and they are roughly the same each morning and also roughly the same each evening.
In the morning my blood sugar is about 16 and before my evening meal they are about 22.

This really confuses me as I don't get why they aren't going down. Also does this sound like diabetes 1 or 2.

I was given insulin injections in hospital but have been discharged with 1000mg slow release metformin twice daily.

Hello there.

I know it's late in UK, so there will be a limited number of people around. I'm not the best person to advise you, as I'm not on any medication, but, I do understand it takes several days for Metformin to build up its effectiveness. We're you given any guidance about what you eat and drink at the hospital?

I don't know the answer.....but I think your gp should do the right tests and explain to you...

Also people on here have great knowledge to guide you .....x

A nutritionist is going to send me an appointment to talk about my diet. Things were explained when I was in hospital but it was so much information and so confusing.

Are you eating the same as you were before diagnosis, or have you changed things?

It would be useful to understand the sort of things you have been eating over the past few days.

I would also contact your health provider and tell them that your BG is staying high, to get proper advice
I found it took 3 weeks for the metformin to kick in, I would cut as much carb as you can. I would cut all grain and grain product, potato, to bring your sugar down asap
the morning 16 will go down slower 'dawn phenominon', I found the before tea BG dropped very quickly in a couple of days, as that's from the carbs i was eating
If you want to, look up the atkins induction diet. that will get your carbs down to 20g a day, when your BG is down and things are more sorted, you can reintroduce some carbs back into your diet

Hi Emmy,

Your Doctor assume that you have are T2. That is why he is trying with metformin. It may take a few weeks to finalise on the treatment. Since you are consulting a Doctor, he will advise you about diet, regular exercise etc...
Dont worry...

Hi. If you are not overweight I would suspect T1 not T2 as you are quite young and experiencing extreme diabetes symptoms. There are quite a few of us mis-diagnosed as T2 when we were actually late onset T1. If you are not already keeping the carbs down do so as it will help get the sugar down. If your sugars don't keep coming down even with low-carbing then do go back to the doc to discuss your diagnosis and suggest the two tests for Late Onset T1 (LADA) which are GAD and c-peptide. If you are very much overweight then T2 becomes more likely and the Metformin and low-carbing will be of some help

Firstly, don't follow advice regarding testing. There are no reason at all not to test very frequently in your situation. Test before and after every time you eat is my advice. Your readings are high enough to cause damage even shortish term so you need to get them down.

The best way to get bg down is to avoid carbs. You may not have been told this by your HCPs, but almost every carb that enters our bodies will turn to bg. Have a look at http://www.dietdoctor.com/diabetes. LCHF works well for many of us, regardless of type.
See if you can get morning readings down along with post meal readings. Test, test, test. It is the only way to know what you can eat and keep your bg down.
If you can´t get bg down to normal readings in a week on LCHF or at least see a considerable reduction in bg in a couple of days you need to get back to your GP to get further tests. Have you had GAD and other antibodies tested?

I'm not sure what I was tested and what antibodies were tested. Thank you everyone for your advice... I will definitely cut down on carbs. My diabetic nurse rang today to see what my blood sugar levels were like. She said to carry on as I am as it can take a while for the medication to work. She is going to ring again next week. Thanks again everyone for your support.
