OK I'm worried he is handling this illness badly.

He eats very little now, (is 87 and has other health issues) however for his main meal, he stuffs himself full of vegetables first (as he always done) but nowadays barely touches the next part of the meal. He then fills himself up, with multiple sugary products anda coffee..

I don't know if this acceptable, thank you.

Oklder people find it difficult to change from what they have always done.
My 94 year-old Mother will still eat toast for breakfast and loves potatoes. I've managed to get her to reduce the amounts, but she's older than me and "knows better".
It sounds cold blooded, but why make such people sufffer? Their time available for developing complications is much less than ours.
Of course your Dad doesn't want to change, but try to get him to modify his ways a little. The veggies for the first course are an excellent thing.
You don't say who does his cooking. My Mum cooks for herself still, so I've just shown her a few recipe ideas

Hi. I agree it may be difficult to get him to change this late in his life. The veggies and coffee are no problem; obviously the sugary things are. Perhaps you can find small areas that can be changed e.g. does he have sugar in his coffee, if so change to a sweetener. Discuss changing to different types of sugary things such as wholemeal flour based or multigrain or perhaps slightly smaller ones?

My 79 year old grandmother eats barely anything, think older people don't need to eat as much especially if they aren't very active. I try and make sure she has at least one meal a day, usually she can't finish it all.
