Hi guys, I have been given a HbA1c sheet on my last report that's written in Czech; However, I think the format is the same in English....
It goes like this.......(S_glukoza) Must be the glucose 8.5 mmol/l .........HbA1c 87 mmol/mol......The ''8.5'' I think is the reading from a test strip?, but what does the 87 mean? Anyone know?

Also what does basal mean? And Bolus mean? Sorry for being slow, but never heard these words before.
Thanks!

Hi @Robcz ,
I can help on the Hba1c questions.
A Hba1c test gives you a very accurate reading of your average sugar in your blood over the last roughly 12 weeks.
In the past it was expressed as a % of sugar in your blood, and the sign of Diabetes was normally higher than 6.5%.
Recently the UK decided to change the way HbA1c readings were given to a figure of mmol/mol., and this is a higher figure, ie 6.5% would be 48 in the new system.
Some countries still use the % figure so, it can be difficult at times, as you still see people using both figures..

The figures given for a blood Sugar reading with a finger prick, are in mmol/L, so are not the same as a Hba1c % reading.
Hope that helps

Thanks for the reply guys!!....OMG! After reading the link from noblehead (Thanks for that)...I was really heading in the wrong direction. Luckily after 3 years of living like a non diabetic (Beer, rum, pizzas, fish & chips) I've woken up to reality again.
Luckily I came back to Europe to see the doc......And thanks to this site...sorry I cant thank you guys enough xxx

Whatever the official guidelines are, the move away from % isn't universal. My hospital and GP are firmly stuck in the past.

Hi. If the 87 is your HBa1C in mmol then it is far too high and needs action. Basal is the once (or twice) a day '24 hour' insulin which is used to match the liver's background glucose output. Bolus is the rapid insulin used for each meal. With the high blood sugar level I suspect you need to be on the Basal/Bolus regime rather than mixed?

Thanks for the explanation Daibell.....That HBa1C reading was from the 3 years I spent in Thailand drinking alcohol every day, and eating rubbish.....I've got the BS under control now....between 4 and 6 now, and been like that for the last week or so.....
The good thing is, I can still have the odd potato or bread at night :-) Funny how the things I took for granted, become very important all of a sudden.....A potato :-)
